Edna shortstop Ray Chavarria was among five freshmen to sign a letter-of-intent to play baseball at the University of Houston-Victoria in the upcoming school year.

The other signees were Langham Creek catcher Nick Garza, Galena Park North Shore catcher Brandon Bohanon, Katy Seven Lakes pitcher Clayton Fowler and infielder Dylan Bates, who played for the Homeschool Christian Youth Association in Houston.

"This is a good group that we will have coming in," UHV baseball coach Terry Puhl said in a news release.

Chavarria was a first-team All-District 28-3A selection for the Cowboys last season after hitting .492 with 17 RBI and 22 runs scored.

"I'm looking forward to playing under coach Puhl and it's close to home so my family and friends will continue to see me play," Chavarria said. "It's also a big plus knowing that it's a winning program and I'll be a part of that."

Bohanon is the son of former major league pitcher Brian Bohanon, who made his professional debut with the Texas Rangers in 1990.

"Having coach Puhl as a coach with his knowledge of the game especially on the professional level speaks volumes for the program there and I look forward to being part of it," Bohanon said.

The Jaguars will field freshman for the first time in the 2011 season.

  • superdad I agree.....I would like to see "some" local talent. Especially considering this Freshman class is historical.

Same thing with the Generals....two players with sporadic playing time is not enough representation of our area. I won't attend their games until I see more local and surrounding areas represented. I know many people that feel this way.

  • I have said this since all the programs started. Baseball you just had Carroll win state, Callalen made it to state, robstown, and of course your yoakum-shiner area and what nothing, nada, zilch.

Maybe the sports program is a 'back-door' spot for kids from the Houston market who for some reason could not get into a school in that region. My taxes go up and for who's benefit?!?!

  • UHV coaches.....where are our local boys? You had a "tryout" but you yielded no local "signees" other than a few call backs. Our locals would like to see some familiar faces....with this economy, you need to think about filling your seats.

    Congrats to the five!
