DEMOCRAT JUSTICE OF THE PEACE VOTES -2010-03-03 07:33:00

An attorney with 18 years of experience practicing law and 34 years in the Navy reserves will face the incumbent District Attorney Stephen Tyler in the November general election.

Deborah Branch won the Democratic nomination, narrowly defeating Victoria attorney Frank F. Henderson Jr.

Branch received 2,111 votes to Henderson's 1,970 votes.

"I'm excited. I'm so appreciative of folks in Victoria," Branch said. "People had a hard decision to make. I truly believe this county is blessed to have people like Henderson who are willing to go out and run for office."

This is Branch's second go at the district attorney job. She ran as a write-in candidate in the 2006 election. She now serves as the assistant district attorney for the 156th Judicial District, which includes Bee, Live Oak and McMullen counties.

Although he lost, Henderson seemed to still be in good spirits. He attributed his loss to a low voter turnout.

"We knew we had to have more than 4,000 votes," Henderson said. "Whenever I go into a race, I never take it lightly. Many people probably thought I would walk away with the win, so they didn't come over and vote, and I understand that."

When asked if he would support Branch in the upcoming general election, Henderson said, "I'm going to have to listen a little bit more to what she has to say."

Tyler, who ran unopposed and received 4,137 votes, had this to say about his new opponent: "It'll be an interesting dynamic in the general election," Tyler said. "She has never tried a murder case or a gang case, and those are the biggest cases we have in Victoria."

In response to Tyler's comments, Branch said, "I wish him well, and I intend to do my best."

  • ochocinco,
Yes you are right, three time LOSER for FH! How much money is he gonna waste before he figures out that nobody wants him? I would be damned ashamed if I were him! He needs to do himself and his family a favor and stop running!

  • Wanted to stay out of this but can't!
Candidates who become INDICTED during a campaign are NOT required to withdraw from the race. CONVICTED candidates must withdraw There would be no time between the primary and the general election to seek a conviction.
Additionally.ask Mr. Henderson, Chief Ure or DA Tyler if there is indeed an indication that Henderson owns any of the Internet Cafe. All three will tell you no.

  • Branch's win is inspiring.

    March 4, 2010 at 4:52 p.m.
  • PatB: I and many others, am of the opinion that Frank Henderson lost the election largely becuase of his recent rift with law enforcement and the whole internet cafe mess. That certainly didn't help him one bit. The negative press he received and the anomosity betweeen Frank and law enforcement worked against him in this election. I think many people were scared that Frank would end up being a Steve Tyler clone (right or wrong) it just appeared Frank had hidden motives. Although Frank is a much different person than Steve, public perception was that he is actually just like him. Lastly, I think Victoria wants a change from the good old by network.

  • "if he doesn't full insight into his opponent's ideals by now, it's no wonder he lost last night"

Wow, that logic implies if you know all there is to know about your opponent it just about guarantees victory, huh? Have to remember that genius material.

  • Was this Henderson's 3rd try at D.A.? If so, wouldn't he get the hint? I think Ron Reyna is another 3rd timer who has lost too if my memory is right.

  • 'Mr. roberttx, Frank Henderson may be a lot of things, but sore loser isn't one of them. Because he wants more insight into Branch's ideals he's "a sore loser"? By what standard? Isn't that what we should all do with every candidate/election? Get a clue, pal.'

if he doesn't full insight into his opponent's ideals by now, it's no wonder he lost last night

Yeah right, well if that makes you feel better then believe what you want!

    March 3, 2010 at 4:23 p.m.
  • Ok I am not one to judge someone from the start but Steven Tyler took his chance to sling mud from the start by wishing her well and then jabbing in that she had not tried murder or gang related cases before. That was just wrong.

    March 3, 2010 at 4:08 p.m.
  • Congratulations to Deborah Branch on her victory!

    March 3, 2010 at 3:14 p.m.
  • Any thoughts as to why Ms. Branch emerged victorious in the fray? Better Backing? More contributions? Better qualifications?
Seems that we now might have two Republicans running for DA! LOL

  • ...I offer you the solution of using Hwy 59 heading north, Hwy 77 heading south, Hwy 87 heading east or west.

Take your own advice FH and take one!

  • FH well put it must be hard to stand and get attack from all sides. But that is public life and why some people do it is really amazzing. that is what being a free country is all about with all the check and balances.

Do us a favor and decided who you will endorse?

    March 3, 2010 at 8:11 a.m.
  • Silly Steve! The biggest cases in Victoria County are the political prosecutions of people who get in your way. Murders and gangs get the attention of ADAs and then settle out -- without telling the victims. Let's compare Victoria County's succesful prosecution rate with adjacent counties and then across the state.

  • Opps....

And NOT just vote Republican across the board.

I guess I need another cup of coffee..

    March 3, 2010 at 7:52 a.m.
  • Thank goodness for Branch!! There is a light at the end of the tunnel concerning the tyrant Tyler. IT will be a much needed boost of morale to local law enforcement.

Although I am registered as a Republican, I encourage other Republicans to actually vote for the best DA and just vote Republican across the board.

    Good Luck Deborah

  • I have resisted posting on the advocate website for many reasons. Today I make my first posting. I do not intend to respond to negative comments nor argue back and forth on a web page. I am open to reasonable debate but am not going to involve myself in the name calling that occurs on this page. If you ever have a desire to find out where I stand on a particular issue feel free to call me.

First I would like to offer my congratulations to Deborah. She is a fine person, as is Steve, in my book. My differences with the two are in regard to legal opinions not personal opinions.

I do have questions that I want each to answer before I offer my support to either candidate. I question Deborah's statement regarding bail bonds. I want to know how she reconciles her statement with Texas Court of Criminal Appeals decisions that say bail may not be used as a tool of oppression and the presumption of innocence guaranteed every person accused of a crime by our Constitution. I want Steve to tell us what exactly the Chief of Police lied about. I know he is charged with perjury, but what did he say that was a lie? These are questions that need to be answered before we elect or re-elect a District Attorney.

I have remained a conservative Democrat my entire life. I believe that most of us sit somewhere in between the radical right and the liberal left. My goal is to bring the Democratic Party more in "the middle" as I hope my Republican friends do the same. I believe in the two party system and hope that we as a country can find a middle ground. By fighting ourselves we are doing the job of others. I often wonder why it takes an American tragedy to pull together. We should learn from past experiences that the statement "United We Stand Divided We Fall" has a valuable meaning.

My love for Victoria County has never wavered. Believe me when I say we don't realize how good we have it. I know because I have lived all over the world while my dad was in the army and there is no place that I would rather be than Victoria County. This is my home. This is where I live and this is where I intend to die. If you disagree with me I offer you the solution of using Hwy 59 heading north, Hwy 77 heading south, Hwy 87 heading east or west. We have a great county and it can be improved upon.

I have made many mistakes in my life and will in all likelyhood make many more. I will continue to try to improve myself. I'm still learning.

A political campaign is very tough on a person and their family. Each campaign I have run, I believe I ran a good clean campaign and grew from the experience. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Thank you to all of you that have offered your prayers or words of encouragement. Those meant a whole lot to me and my family.

    Frank F. Henderson, Jr.

  • roberttx...Henderson does not sound like a sore loser to me. He sounds like the kind of person who will not blindly follow or support an individual simply because a particular political party has nominated them. I respect a person who looks at the individual, and their qualifications/abilities, instead of their political affiliation.

    March 3, 2010 at 5:18 a.m.
  • When asked if he would support Branch in the upcoming general election, Henderson said, "I'm going to have to listen a little bit more to what she has to say."

    what a sore loser
