Candidates running for Congress in districts 14 and 15 are headed for runoffs after Tuesday's primary elections.

In the District 14 Democratic race, Robert Pruett, chief of police in Galena Park, and Winston Cochran, a League City attorney, will have a runoff.

Pruett received 6,836 votes, or 42 percent of total votes, while Cochran received 31 percent, or 5,107 votes.

"I plan to hit the ground running and work hard and try to get my supporters back out there and win this runoff," Pruett, 55, said. "I won in all the counties except for Galveston. I'm real proud of what we've accomplished. Hopefully, we'll do it again."

Cochran plans to interact more with his constituents on a one-on-one basis.

"I'm going to try a lot more personal contact any way I can - knock on doors, letter writing, whatever it might be," Cochran said. The winner will face Republican incumbent Ron Paul in November.

In District 15, Republican candidates Paul B. Haring and Eddie Zamora will have a runoff.

Haring, a teacher in Goliad, garnered 5,387, or 42 percent, of the total votes. Zamora received 4,186 votes, or 33 percent.

"I hope to get as many voters as we can and get the facts out to people," Haring said, who says his No. 1 priority is supporting pro-life. "I'm the only candidate that's possible in defeating (Ron Paul) because of my experience and background."

Zamora, a sales and marketing executive in Edinburg, said he was surprised at the runoff, but will continue promoting his importance on border security.

"I was expecting an outright victory," Zamora said. "We'll do what we have to do to get our message out, particularly on border security. I'm the only one interested in security on our borders with no amnesty."

The winner will face Democrat incumbent Ruben Hinojosa in November.
