Victoria West won't open its doors until August and won't play its first football game until September.
But the future Warriors have already begun preparing for next season.
Leonard McAngus has been working with his players for nearly three weeks since being named the school's first head football coach and he has already begun his initial offseason Boot Camp.
The players started what McAngus is calling "Warrior Makers" on Tuesday and they will determine when Boot Camp concludes.
"Our kids will be going through some really tough drills," McAngus said. "They get out of it when we get 100 percent effort, 100 percent attendance and 100 percent unselfishness.
"That's what we're looking for from our kids and once we get that we feel like we've got a team starting to develop. Until we get that, we really don't have a team."
McAngus' first introduction to Boot Camp came when he was the offensive coordinator at Victoria High under Mark Reeve from 1990 to 1995.
He carried the concept with him to Gonzales and Justin Northwest and introduced it to the West players with a series of drills and exercises to go along with their usual weight-lifting sessions.
"It's to put the kids in a real tough situation where they're physically wore out," McAngus said. "We want to see them respond the way they need to in the fourth quarter of a football game.
"Our belief is if you've been busting your tail the whole game, you're going to be tired in the fourth quarter. Whether you're winning or losing, you're going to be tired. How you respond to that when you've got a close ballgame is going to determine whether you're winning or not a lot of times. That's what we're putting our kids into."
The players have begun to adjust to McAngus' style and expectations.
"I thought it was going to be fun," said quarterback Kyle Motal. "I knew it would be a lot of hard work. He's picked up the tempo a lot. He has a lot of dedication to the sport. We're working hard and learning his style of coaching."
McAngus wants the players to develop a bond during Boot Camp that carries over into the season.
"I think probably the biggest thing other than effort is when it's their turn to go we want them going as hard as they can go," McAngus said. "When they're not going, when they're waiting for their turn to go on a drill, we want them yelling and screaming and encouraging their teammates and getting their mind off themselves.
"I really believe you can do a lot of great things if you just get you're mind off yourself and start worrying about other people.
"That's kind of the philosophy of Boot Camp. One of our mottos is 'Out of self and into team,' and once we get that attitude and they learn that and they're going to have to learn it before they get out of Boot Camp."
Courtney Boyce joined McAngus' staff as offensive coordinator on Monday. Boyce played quarterback for McAngus at Victoria High and coached with him at Gonzales and Justin Northwest before becoming an assistant on Reeve's staff at Cuero last season.
McAngus is still searching for a defensive coordinator and should have his staff completed before the team begins spring drills in late April or early May.
"I think the kids have good strength and they work really hard," McAngus said. "On their speed and things and we can still improve on that area. None of that matters if we don't become a team. That's what Boot Camp is really all about is making a team."

tstorm, I just can't help it. It just amazes me to sit here and read comments from people like you that sugar coat everything. Please don't worry about my child. They are doing just great. I am just enjoying sitting back and watching you try to talk yourself into thinking ya'll got some sort of Vince Lombardi with all the answers. Look at his record, pretty self-explanatory.
March 11, 2010 at 11:58 a.m.Poppa, what effort was made on the part of VISD to get the best that they could get? Put it in the paper? Great programs go after great people. No effort was put into this. That is why we had coaches that were out of jobs applying. You can attract great coaches in Victoria. Money talks!
March 10, 2010 at 11:51 a.m.Now before my nap, please tell me again I do not know anything.
You are forgiven young man.
March 10, 2010 at 10:32 a.m.unforreal- I dont have a clue? I've been around this business I'm sure way longer than you. Finding the "best coach" isn't about wins-loses all of the time. Having the right coach for the job is. You can be the best coach in the world but if you don't have a team who will buy into your system, kids that are athletic and smart, kids who handle their business in the classroom, or a town to support them then who are they supposed to "win."
Yes winning is very important as a Coach and a player as well as fans but more importantly finding a coach who will put a fear back into these kids who think they rule the world these days and a Coach who has morals and disapline, that's what I'm for.
As for his record, who is to say that he isn't a great coach or the best coach out there? You may also want to think about these other coaches who you love and wish could come to Victoria do have a family I'm sure. Do you think it's easy to uproute a family and start their whole life over? Having kids do you think your son or daughters would like that? Finding your wife a new job? As a coach you move a lot yes, but there is a time where you will listen to your wife and kids and say enough is enough. Then you will look more into the area they are located. For example, Dallas coaches are pretty much where schools pick and pull from when looking for a new Head Coach. Wouldn't you think it is much easier for a Coach to take an offer closer to home where they are at LEAST making $10,000-$12,000 more than they would be here?
Now please tell me what would be the reason for "the best coach" in Texas to come here when they can be in a place where there is talent at every corner and a much better pay check each month?
All in all Victoria did a great job of getting a great coach. And not only will the school be better for this but the City of Victoria will as well. I'm willing to bet Coach McAngus will have these kids walking around town with their head held hi and giving the respect to teachers, parents, and elders alike in the meantime.
Thanks for reading, now my old butt needs a nap.
March 10, 2010 at 10:30 a.m.Poppa, not a coach just a concerned parent who tried to get VISD to do the right thing awhile back. VISD doesn't have a clue, kind of like you. The facts speak for themselves. Is he one of the best in the State of Texas? NO. They didn't have the energy to go out and recruit a good coach. Just settle for less. That is Victoria for ya!
March 10, 2010 at 9:57 a.m.i have to be honest, ill most likely end up supporting both schools.
here's wishing both schools are a GREAT success off the field and on !
March 9, 2010 at 1:14 p.m.unforreal -
Did you apply for this job ? Well then you go on with your kid whom I'm sure you coached all growing up like the little league dad you're sounding like and stay out of the chat room if you don't like what these VICTORIA people are saying about their teams.
Wish you luck, maybe we can all come out and watch you coach some flag football sometime.
March 9, 2010 at 12:48 p.m.Typical Victoria, fired up about a coach that has just been fired at his previous place of employment! What is his overall record? This was my point from day one. Why can't VISD go out and recruit a big name coach? They just sit back and wait. The top 2 canidates were guys who were just fired. Come on! This is why we are no longer in your messed up district.
March 9, 2010 at 11:52 a.m.That boot camp is no where near that tough I'm there I see it... its all hype!! East side Beast side!! the truth will be shown!! We are Titans in every sense of the word!! believe that!!
March 8, 2010 at 10:18 p.m.west isn't training as hard as the east not even close west is just new whit another vhs coach THAT is why they are getting alot of hype. GO TITANS!!!! EAST SIDE BEAST SIDE WE ARE TITANS!!!
March 8, 2010 at 6:43 p.m.Ahhhh Yeah MAC is BACK. Are you ready for some real football Victoria? Some Discipled football with alot of Class and Character. Its gonna be fun baby!!!!!!
March 8, 2010 at 9:46 a.m.EAST FOOTBALL WILL REIGN SUPREME... WE WILL ALWAYS HONOR YOU DEAR EAST SIDE HIGH... GO TITAN!! DYNAMIC DUO GUS "BUS" DE LOS SANTOS FB & JOHNATHAN "ITZY" GARNER RB
March 7, 2010 at 10:38 p.m.Silver & Black attack! I like it :D
March 5, 2010 at 11:30 a.m.Blah, blah, blah, blah! Go Titans.......
March 5, 2010 at 10:07 a.m.Nobody is bashing East. East just doesn't seem to be starting with as much enthusiasm and excitement as West. VISD picked the coaches and made the assignments. West just happens to have a Head Football Coach that is extremely driven with a serious set of standards. I call it like I see it. West will be the best. Whichever school wins first, will have a huge following. If West has a bunch of success from the beginning, which they will, then of course the East will be crying "Foul". VISD created this monster and I am telling you now, The West is the place to be. It's about to become the VHS of old. The West will be busting at the seams before to long. Middle school families will be trying like heck to move into the Cade Middle School zone, so the kids can go to 2 new schools during their VISD school careers. How about everyone sit back and get ready for the Silver & Black attack! GO WEST WARRIORS!
March 5, 2010 at 9:07 a.m.Red Rage, you said it! Feels like old Raider/Stingaree days. Finally, some fun down there again!
March 4, 2010 at 7:58 p.m.I can feel Victoria coming alive again! Woohoo! East vs West rivalry....can't wait!!
March 4, 2010 at 7:36 p.m.East is least, West is best!! It has begun.
March 4, 2010 at 4:02 p.m.yeojj,
No one is bashing the East! People from the West are just getting excited about things. More people from the East should post!
March 4, 2010 at 3:59 p.m.East Side will do their talking on the field and the court! Go Titans!!!!
March 4, 2010 at 3:10 p.m.If you want your kids to win just send them to Calhoun
March 4, 2010 at 2:37 p.m.Texag91-it is so nice to hear positive!! I wish the best to both schools. My child will be going to East and the only thing I am disappointed about is all of the negativity and "East" bashing coming from the West. We are all still both Victoria schools. I was so worried about this split for this reason. I knew it would get ugly and look who's starting it......PARENTS!!! Let's try to be good role models for our kids.
March 4, 2010 at 1:28 p.m.So, how is it that the students who Maybe will be going to East (what if they move before school starts) are left out in the cold without training. Wouldn't it be right to train all the people who want to participate in sports. To split the kids now, doesn't seem equal. Train them all and then when the split comes, they are starting off equal.
March 4, 2010 at 12:46 p.m.My daughter will be in the first graduating class of West. The whole family feels like she is about to enter a school that is caring and driven .Have not done the football games in the last 3 years, but I can guarantee you we will be at box office to get season tickets for her Senior year. We are excited!!!!!
March 4, 2010 at 11:10 a.m.WEST WARRIORS ALL THE WAY.
Coach MAC Is already setting the standard for what it will take to have a winning program in Victoria! East I hope you are taking notes. The days of mediocre practices and lackluster play calling are over! Mark my words when West is dominating year after year because of hard work character and discipline East is going to be crying about how unfair the east west split is. Way to go coach Mac I know boot camp made lots of great Stings I know it will work on a worrier as well!
March 4, 2010 at 10:03 a.m.I said it, I said it......Coach Mac is about to show you why these kids at West are going to kick some tail. They may not be as good of athletes as the East kids, but they are going to get after it, and they will be disciplined. If you want to win.....LISTEN up, find a way to get to West quickly. West will ultimately dominate in every sport because Football sets the tone for everything. West will win immediately. Take it to the bank!
March 4, 2010 at 9:40 a.m.So when the players were split up during practice depending on which H.S. they will be attending next year, where were the East side coaches? Why in the heck did VISD keep this Finley character? VISD can preach both schools equal, but in reality West was handed a new, fresh start in coaches and East gets Memorial reject with a PROVEN losing record.
March 4, 2010 at 9:29 a.m.my "kids" are telling me that West is conditioning right now and East ""is saying" they are but aren't. Heck yea!!
**VICAD- do a story on East. I strongly believe everyone really would like to know about both programs.
March 4, 2010 at 9:20 a.m.Now we see why West will be better than East. The man was barely hired and is already getting things rollin'!
March 4, 2010 at 8:19 a.m.c'mon 91 you know East program is watching....with chips in hand and a wii in the other. lol I hope Finely is doing something!?! luckily my kid won't be there for awhile and he should be gone.
East is tha BEAST!
March 4, 2010 at 6:50 a.m."Our kids will be going through some really tough drills," McAngus said. "They get out of it when we get 100 percent effort, 100 percent attendance and 100 percent unselfishness."
For all the Victorians that did not like the way coaches were doing their things while it was consolidated , this is for you! If I was sending my kid to West you better believe I'd be looking forward to having him play football under this man. Good Luck West Warriors.
