VICTORIA, Texas (AP) - Life in prison is the punishment for a San Antonio man convicted of killing an elderly neighbor by shooting her in the head with an arrow.

A jury in Victoria on Wednesday rejected the death penalty for 20-year-old Joe Estrada Jr. and decided he must serve life behind bars without the possibility of parole.

Jurors on Feb. 18 convicted Estrada of capital murder in the 2008 killing of 76-year-old Viola Barrios in what prosecutors say was a burglary. The victim was the matriarch of the Los Barrios Mexican restaurant, which she opened in 1979.

The trial was moved to Victoria because of intense media coverage in the San Antonio area.

  • Needing money for an abortion was the reason he gave.

  • Does anybody know if he showed remorse of the crime in court or was he faking remorse, and why or what excuse he said for killing Mrs. Barrios.

  • He said he robbed her because he needed $300 for an abortion. I followed it on mysa.com.

Hearing & seeing the details of the horrific way Mrs. Barrios was murdered had to be difficult for the jurors, they deserve much appreciation, as those memories will live with them forever. I don't understand why ViCad did not cover the trial, when was the last time a death penalty case was heard in Victoria?

  • 10 of the 12 jurors wanted death but two said no to death. So he got life without parole. He deserved to die. VicAd did not cover this trial. A friend of mine was on the jury and gave me daily updates.

Not only did he shoot her in the head with an arrow but tried to pull it out but could not so he broke off the shaft and left the head of the arrow in her head. He came back later after buying gasoline with her credit cards and burned her house down with her in it. Then he went on a wild spending spree with her credit cards in her car. There was much more to the trial but too much to put here.
    He deserves to die.

  • Hopefully, his time behind the bars will not be long, because I for one don't feel that I should have to pay for his room and board. Maybe he'll slip on the soap in the shower and hit his head.

  • This is all so sad! I love her restaurant! One of the top 5 for mexican food in San Antonio. If you are ever in S.A. make sure to you go there to eat!
