Just one week before the third annual Claud Jacobs Collegiate women's golf tournament, the Texas State Bobcats have a trip to Las Vegas planned, but all thoughts Saturday were on their own tournament to be held at Victoria Country Club on March 14-15.

The defending champions braved cool conditions Saturday morning to get in a practice around at the country club in preparation to defend the title they squeaked out last year in a fifth-man playoff over Lamar University.

Both teams finished the 54-hole event tied at 920, with the teams having to go to each team's fifth person final-round score to determine the champion. Texas State held the edge behind Amy Glazer's 78 to hoist the winning trophy.

Texas State coach Mike Akers sees another tough challenge ahead of his team in defending its title this year with what he feels is the tournaments strongest field in three years.

"It's fairly deep this year," Akers said of the field. :In the past we had two or three teams that could win, this year I think we have at least five or six that could potentially win it. It's be far the strongest field we've had from top to bottom."

Along with Texas State, this year's field will included Oklahoma, Sam Houston State, Lamar, Stephen F. Austin, Brown, Akron, UT-Pan American, Northern Illinois, Houston Baptist, St. Edward's Arkansas State, Oklahoma City, the Redlands and McClennan Community College.

Akers will have three players back in the field from last year's winning squad and he hopes that experience will pay off again for this Bobcats.

"When you know the course it's always an advantage, especially when you get the juniors and seniors that have played it a couple of times," Akers said.

Glazer, a senior from Southlake, will be among the three returnees along with sophomore Gabby de Rauck of George, South Africa, and junior Trine Mortensen of Silkeborg, Denmark. The trio will be joined by freshmen Valdis Jonsdottir of Akranes, Iceland, and Krista Puiste of Riga, Latvia.

The five are coming off a ninth-place finish in the 17-team field at the Miami Hurricane Invitational.

The Bobcats will play in the UNLV Invitational Mar. 8-10, before turning full attention to the Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate and the Southland Conference Championships. The conference championships are set for April 19-21 in Huntsville.

Akers hopes to use his tournament as a warm-up to the conference championships.

"Lamar and Sam Houston have been playing well so this should give us a good opportunity to see how we are going to have to prepare ourselves for conference," Akers said.
