Through having two children in the Victoria school district, Michael DiSanto said he's in touch with VISD schools.
Now, he's filed for the District 7 seat of the school board.
Election will be Saturday, May 8.
"I feel like I can help them out with being able to relate to what needs to be done to help the kids grow and be all they can be within VISD," said DiSanto, who has a daughter at Crain Middle School and a son at Schorlemmer Elementary School.
Filings opened on Feb. 6 and closed Monday.
The three seats that will expire in May are: James Murphy Sr. for District 1, Bernie Klimist for District 6, and Ray Walden for District 7.
Murphy and Klimist filed for re-election.
DiSanto, a service sales representative for GE Betz, would like to help improve Victoria school district in various aspects, he said.
"I'd like to improve the safety of the traffic around the schools," he said. "I'd like to see the dropout rate be reduced. I'd like to see the GT programs and the honors programs increase in size substantially in the middle schools, especially."
In District 1, Murphy said He wants to return to the board to help complete some unfinished projects.
"There's just some incomplete projects, like the natatorium and fine arts center," said Murphy, a retired staff development coordinator at the Gulf Bend Center. "That's the reason why I wanted to get back on and work with the superintendent and administration, and make sure we do the things that we promised."
Murphy was first elected in 1985 and served until 1992. He re-joined the board in May 2004 and has been on the board since.
Klimist, like Murphy, said he's looking forward to seeing the school district's projects completed.
"Now comes the good part when we finish the schools," said Klimist, whose daughter will be a freshman at Victoria West High School in August. "This is when everything's coming into place. Hopefully it'll make the difference we hoped and dreamed it would."
Klimist, an attorney, was first appointed to the board in May 2003. He was elected in May 2004, and has been on the board since.
Walden resigned from the board in November so a family member could apply for a job with the district. The board, at first planned to appoint a replacement, but then changed its mind. Walden will serve until his replacement is elected.
