It's one of the most popular events at the annual Fiesta San Antonio, but it almost ceased to exist.

Cornyation, which touts itself as the raunchiest, cheapest event of Fiesta, can be traced back to as early as 1951 as part of A Night in Old San Antonio, according to the event's official Web site, www.cornyation.org.

"The show's irreverent pokes at politicians, the prominent and the not-so-prominent, caused its demise as part of NIOSA in 1964," according to the Web site.

It was revived in 1965, 1979 and finally in 1982 by Bob Jolly and Ray Chavez, who kept it running uninterrupted for 26 years.

This year, Cornyation, which is now a nonprofit group that donated more than $500,000 to local charities, will be April 20-22 at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre in San Antonio. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $15-$35, go on sale Friday at 11 a.m.

The show is for adults only, according to the Web site, so make sure to leave the kids at home.
