Barriers, construction crews and road signs all point to changes along Laurent Street, but not every change points to road repair.

After almost 40 years in business at 3802 N. Laurent St., Kloesel's Cleaners moved March 15 to 1704 E. Airline Road.

Owner Tommy Cooley attributed the move to a decrease in business caused when the city's street construction project began.

"It's one of those things - you hate to shut it down, but you ended up having to do it," he said. "Hopefully, we can get our customers to move over to the other one."

Kloesel's Cleaners operates four locations citywide, but the Laurent Street site was the original, said Cooley, who owns the business with his wife, Jill Cooley. The husband-wife duo purchased the property from James and Rose Kloesel.

"That was the one we grew out of," the husband explained. "It did very well years ago, and we were able to expand."

The Laurent Street construction isn't the first project that affected business, the Cooleys said.

The company's Zac Lentz Parkway location experienced similar issues several years ago during the loop expansion, he said. The area in front of the shop decreased from a two-lane road to a one-way feeder road and made a number of customers uncomfortable, Cooley said.

"For some of us, that's not a problem. For some of the older people, it's not something they're willing to do."

The decision to move was a difficult one, Cooley said, but it's one of those decisions a company must make, especially in a slow economy.

The two locations are nearby - only about 10 blocks apart - and Cooley said he hopes customers make their way out to the new site.

"We're still the same Kloesel's Cleaners that's always offered the quality, personal service," he said.
