The economy weighs heavily on many people's minds these days. As such, the Victoria College Lyceum Series picked economist and University of Texas professor Dr. James Galbraith as the next speaker.
Galbraith will take the stage at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Victoria College Fine Arts Auditorium.
Galbraith is the son of prominent economist John K. Galbraith and currently teaches economics at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and at the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin.
"Throughout his career, Galbraith has closely examined the economic and political structure of the United States and the role it plays in the global economy and has steadfastly maintained his criticism of our modern systems and even his own profession," according to the news release.
Galbraith is also the author of numerous books, among the most recent being "Unbearable Cost: Bush, Greenspan and the Economics of Empire" in 2006 and "The Predator State: How Conservatives Abandoned the Free Market and Why Liberals Should Too" in 2008. He is also a regular contributor to publication such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Texas Observer.
In addition to his role as professor and author, Galbraith was also a congressional staff member from 1981 to 1982, eventually serving as director of the Joint Economic Committee, according to the news release. He has also been director of the University of Texas Inequality Project, a senior scholar with the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College and a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution.
The Lyceum Series began in 1974 and all presentations are free and open to the public. For more information, call 361-572-6422.
