Fire marshal investigates possible arson in five-acre city property fire

It took area firefighters about an hour to bring a fire under control near Farm-to-Market Road 1685 and Pozzi Road.

The Victoria County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a possible arson fire Sunday afternoon.

The fire burned about five acres of city property surrounding a pond near Farm-to-Market Road 1685 and Pozzi Road about 5:30 p.m.

"It doesn't appear to be an accidental fire," said County Fire Marshal Ron Pray. "At this point, we're looking at it as possibly being an arson."

A man was seen leaving the area about the same time the fire began. He was questioned by deputies, but Pray said he does not think the man was connected to the incident.

Firefighters worked for about an hour to bring the blaze under control because of wet ground conditions, Pray said. Some trucks became stuck in the mud and in some marshy areas firefighters were sent out on foot to battle the blaze.

The Victoria Fire Department, the Victoria County Sheriff's Department and Quail Creek and Mission Valley Volunteer fire departments responded to the scene.
