A woman was hospitalized Sunday after she was struck while driving in her Ford Mustang on Sunday afternoon.
About 1 p.m., Pamela Mehrtens, 44, of Victoria, was headed east on the frontage road of Loop 463 and Bridge Boulevard when she was struck by Christine Gonzalez, 25, of Victoria, driving a Chevy Yukon sport utility vehicle, said Senior Patrol Officer Joe Valadez with the Victoria Police Department.
Gonzalez failed to yield the right of way to Mehrtens and was ticketed, he said.
Mehrtens' vehicle slid across the intersection and struck a utility pole. When firefighters arrived, Mehrtens was still trapped in her car. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate her, and AEP was dispatched to inspect the pole for damages.
Mehrtens was taken to DeTar Hospital Navarro with non-life threatening injuries.

John...Nowhere did I complain about giving or not giving tickets. I was just stating facts. The city seems to have decided that they've been leaving a lot of money on the table by NOT giving tickets in traffic accidents. I don't know off the top of my bald head how much the ticket for failure to yield is going to cost, but the city stands to make a bunch of money off the tickets. Do you disagree that the city's coffers will note an increase in ... you know, that nasty "R" word? Would you also disagree that the vast majority of official contacts between civilian citizens and the police results in money being paid into the city bank account? I'm just sayin' that if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and waddles like a duck, it's PROBABLY a revenue agent.
March 29, 2010 at 7:54 p.m.WWW, this is interesting, I see Lott is still a speed trap, I remember that when I went to school in Waco in 76, 77.

March 29, 2010 at 4:55 p.m.85...Nothing negative. I'm just mentioning that for a long time, tickets were not issued unless the cop actually saw the accident. Now they are. Every ticket generates...wait for it... R E V E N U E!
March 29, 2010 at 4:18 p.m.Wayward, you and Zorro need to get together. You both are negative about everything. With you two, who needs police, city government, a president, etc. You two have it all figured out. You are certainly entitled to your opinions but keep in mind, no one likes a manipulator/pescimist and a couple of other words that I cant type on here....
March 29, 2010 at 4:01 p.m.Briggs Blvd. Knew it as soon as I saw the pic. Have to go this way daily several times and its always a mess.
March 29, 2010 at 3:28 p.m.Well unfortunately an accident is just an what it is...an accident...They have been happening before the invention of cell phones, GPS, TV screens in vehicles and whatever else some people believe are distracting. Things happen and we just can not explain them.

And why does the caption under the photo say it's on North Navarro?
Do Advocate editors not work on Sundays?
March 29, 2010 at 9:40 a.m.I'm with EdithAnn....Bobby, what did you blame wrecks on before cell phones? Just curious?
March 29, 2010 at 9:15 a.m.Edith Ann, surely you remember all of those SUV that were driving down the road and just "flipped" over, or the rain caused accidents, or the sunlight. Let us never put blame on people who are distracted or on people who think others "better" get out of their way. Or the ones that think speed limits are for those who "don't know how to drive, like I do." I agree with Bobby, but prolly is just trying to be cute. Didn't work did it?
March 29, 2010 at 8:24 a.m."Gonzalez failed to yield the right of way to Mehrtens and was ticketed"
This is the second mention I've seen recently in the Advocate of a ticket being issued by the VRA to drivers who failed to yield right-of-way. When did this start? For a long time, we've read that no tickets were issued and the reason was that the cop didn't issue a ticket unless he witnessed the accident. I guess that tickets are now being issued, this is a new revenue enhancement program for the VRA?
March 29, 2010 at 7:50 a.m.What did we blame wrecks on before cell phones?
And you probably don't realize this, but 'prolly' isn't a word.
