The opening reception for the 61st annual Texas Watercolor Society National Juried Exhibition will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at the Rockport Center for the Arts. The event is free and open to the public.
The exhibition will be up at the center through May 8.
Rockport has long been known as a haven for local artists of all kinds.
Thanks to the town's recent coup of snagging the honor of hosting the 61st annual Texas Watercolor Society's national juried art exhibition, they're taking their reputation nationwide.
Featuring nationally-known watercolorists from Texas and 33 other states, this is the first time Rockport has hosted the event, according to a Rockport Center for the Arts news release.
"The outstanding collection will prove to be a real feast for the eyes - exposing the scope, variety, styles and spontaneity of the watercolor medium," Rockport Center for the Arts curator, John Aasp, said in the news release. "The center is honored to host such a prestigious event and amazing talent this year."
The pieces in the show were juried and selected by renowned watercolorists Janet Walsh and Arne Westerman, and 60 paintings were selected from more than 470 entries.
Prizes awarded range from $7,000 to $10,000.
Walsh is president emeritus of the American Watercolor Society and Westerman is an award-winning artist, according to the news release.
The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, opened on Thursday and runs through May 8.
On April 10, an opening reception will be at the center and many of the artists in the show will be on hand to visit with patrons, according to the news release.
In 1949, the Texas Watercolor Society was founded with the mission to promote and advance the art of watercolor painting. Each year, the society's juried exhibition bounces between its headquarters in San Antonio and another Texas city.
