Area athletes headed to state meet

Cuero's Buster Hansel and Monte Green and Yoakum's William Markert have qualified for the University Interscholastic League's Track and Field Championships.

Hansel won the boys 3,200-meter run, Green won the boys long jump and Markert won the boys shot put at the Region IV-3A meet on Monday at the Flour Bluff track in Corpus Christi.

Refugio's Logan Koonce won the boys pole vault, Rice Consolidated's Chris Dorsey finished second in the boys discus and Van Vleck's La'Tricia Griffin finished second in the girls discus at the Region IV-2A meet on Monday at Converse Judson and qualified for the state meet.

Calhoun's Terry Williams won the boys long jump and William Matthews finished second in the boys high jump on Monday at the Region IV-4A meet at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio and qualified for the state meet.

The regional meets conclude Tuesday. The top two finishers in each event qualify for the state meet, which is scheduled for May 14-15 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
