To look at Summer Bacak's three sons, it is hard to believe they were born premature and weighed less than two pounds each.
The triplets, who now weigh in around 30 pounds, are the subjects of the winning photo in this year's Adorable Baby Amateur Photography contest sponsored by DeTar Hospital and the Victoria Advocate. The contest was open to all babies born at the Women and Children's Center at DeTar Hospital North during calendar year 2009.
This year, 125 photos were entered.
"The three judges - two photographers and a representative from the Victoria Advocate - had their work cut out for them. They went from 125 photos down to their top 50 picks; then to 25; then 15, 13, 12 and finally 10. In the end, it always comes down to the quality of the photo and the concept behind it, said Judith Barefield, director of marketing for DeTar Healthcare System.
Bacak's sons, Julian Michael Bacak Manzano, Jordan Ray Bacak Manzano and Joshua Alan Bacak Manzano were 10 months old when they posed for the photo wearing muscle shirts and jeans.
"They were so small that they couldn't sit up by themselves, so my daughters and daughter-in-law got behind them and held them up," said Sue Bacak, the babies' great-grandmother of Ganado. She submitted the winning entry.
The trio are starting to walk now, and they have each developed their own personalities.
"They are like ants. They are all over the place," their great-grandmother said.
Twins run in the Bacak family, but this is the first instance of triplets, she said.
The boys are the grandchildren of Jody and Gwen Bacak and the great-grandsons of Marvin Bacak, all of Ganado.
Bacak will received $100 for the winning photo.
In second place was Ryder James Crossler who also had a little help in the photo. Ryder and his older brother Robby Crossler weren't real excited about having their pictures taken. So Robby held his brother and was being nice to him, trying to get him to enjoy the moment.
And that's when their mother, Amanda Crossler, took advantage of the brotherly love.
"I was sitting on the floor and started taking pictures. They didn't even know I took the picture," she said.
Ryder was 2 months old then. Now, at 10 months, he still doesn't like to have his picture taken.
But one thing hasn't changed. His brother, age 4, still dotes on him, their mother said.
Ryder and Robby are also the son of Robert Crossler. They live in Victoria. Grandparents are Suzan and Larry Bobbitt, of West Columbia, and Kim Crossler of Washington state.
They received $75 for placing second.
Another adventurer, Richard Wyatt Ball, likes to be outdoors and doesn't really like to have his picture taken either. So to capture the third place photo, his mother and grandmother made him happy. They moved a white rocking chair out into a pasture filled with wildflowers and let the toddler start to play.
"He needed a little help climbing into the chair," said his mother, Allison Ball, of Schroeder. "He does not like to have his picture taken, but we caught him at the right time to get the picture."
She said he is the happiest when he is outside. If she and her husband, Wesley Ball, are working in the yard, he is along side them playing in the dirt.
Grandparents are Pat and Bode Hausmann, Wayne and Sharon Franke and Richard and Kathy Ball, all of Schroeder.
They received a $50 prize for placing third.
Seven honorable mention winners will receive $25 each. They are:
Aliyah Marie Santellana, born Oct. 19, daughter of Cirilo and Raynel Santellana, of Victoria.
