Toddler puts car in gear, hits garage wall

May 13, 2010 at 12:13 a.m.

A toddler, who loves playing with cars, put his mother's SUV in gear Thursday afternoon, causing the car to strike the garage wall.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. at their home in the 2200 block of North Street.

Amanda Stelly, 24, told officer James Collins that her 2-year-old son was not yet buckled in, when she ran inside to get a diaper bag.

The boy made his way to the front seat and pulled the gear shift, said Collins.

"Thank God he wasn't able to push the gas," said Stelly, who was relieved no one was injured.

The mother of three said she was planning to take her children to the park.

"I ran in the house for just a little bit," said Stelly, who added her son is fascinated by cars.

Instead of having a teddy bear to hold when he goes to sleep, he sleeps with a car, she said.

"He's my little race car driver," said Stelly, but half-heartedly joked she would have to teach him the difference between his toys and her car.

Emergency personnel checked the house for structural damage, Collins said.

The car sustained the most damage, Stelly said.

Her other two children, a 6-year-old girl and an 11-month-old boy, were buckled into their car seats during the incident.
