The Memorial Vipers will face a hot offense Friday when the take on the San Antonio Churchill Chargers in the Class 5A area playoffs.

The Chargers are 27-7 this season and have lit up the scoreboard recently.

Chad Marshall's team has averaged more than nine runs in the last five games and Austin High couldn't hold Churchill below four runs in their bi-district series last week.

Memorial and Churchill will play a one game playoff at 7:30 p.m. at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio.

Memorial head coach Manuel Alvarado is confident junior right-handed pitcher Jordan Pacheco can cool off the Chargers' bats.

"I feel like my pitcher can go out there and shut those guys down," said Alvarado.

Alvarado opted for the one game playoff rather than the best-of-three series.

After splitting the first two games of their bi-district series the Chargers were down to their last out trailing 6-2 in the seventh.

Then Churchill put things together. The Chargers took advantage of two hit batters and two fielding errors, got RBI singles by Norm Bodet and Reed Kirksey followed by a two-run homer by Michael Kraft to send the game into extra innings.

The Chargers pulled off the comeback with two runs in the eighth to down the Maroons 8-6 and move to the area round.

"That's baseball, it's not over until the last out," Alvarado said.
