FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Houston-Victoria baseball team's run in the NAIA Championship Tournament has come to an end.
The University of British Columbia eliminated the Jaguars by taking a 9-3 win on Thursday at FPU Field.
UHV went 2-2 in the tournament and finished the season with a 33-22 record.
"The first two games we were firing on all cylinders," said UHV coach Terry Puhl. "I would have liked to have scored more runs against that pitcher (for Point Loma Nazarene), but we just did not hold them.
"You;ve got to have good pitching. That's what it takes to win."
British Columbia (41-12), the tournament's top seed, advanced to the championship against Point Loma Nazarene.
The Thundebirds must defeat Point Loma Nazarene twice to earn a berth in the NAIA World Series.
The Jaguars scored in the top of the first inning when Ryan Gilbert tripled and came home on a John Longoria sacrifice fly.
Longoria hit a solo home run to put UHV up 2-0 in the third.
British Columbia tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth before scoring seven times in the fifth.
The Thunderbirds had five hits against UHV starter Pete Ontiveros and took advantage of two errors.
The Jaguars scored their final run on a solo home run by David Baker in the sixth inning.
UHV had six hits against British Columbia starter Sheldon McDonald and reliever Dan Britton-Foster.
"It was a good experience," Puhl said. "The guys know with it's going to take next year."
The Jaguars are scheduled to bus to Los Angeles and fly back to Houston on Friday before returning to Victoria.
