CUERO - Jolly Badgett, 83, became DeWitt County's emergency management coordinator following the flood of 1998.
"I managed the warehouse where some of the relief supplies and things were coming in," Badgett recalled. "Later, the county judge (Ben Prause ) asked me to become the county emergency management coordinator, and I agreed."
Badgett, a former sales representative for a rice mill, also doubles as the county's flood plain administrator.
In his 11th year as the EMC, Badgett said he is "always looking to see what's happening" with the National Hurricane Center.
"When activity starts in the Atlantic Ocean, I monitor it as the season begins," he said. "If something is moving toward us, we'll begin having planning meetings with other officials and agencies, and preparing."
Badgett is pleased with recent renovations of the emergency operations center in the basement of the DeWitt County Law Enforcement Center.
"It used to be like a dungeon down there," he said. "Now, it's something to behold."
