In fewer than five minutes, the first touchdown had been made, and all the familiar feelings came back to Beverly Helmers - the hometown rivalry was back.

Fans from Victoria East and Victoria West warmed the chilly night air at Memorial Stadium with screams of "unleash the beast" and "West is the best" at Victoria's first in-city football rivalry game since the days of Victoria High and Stroman.

Helmers stood in West's reserved section and instantly became reminiscent of the her own high school days.

"I think it's helped with the morale of the city," said the 1979 Victoria High graduate, who was donned in anything red, black or Warrior related that she could find.

Her friend, Sue Phillips, worked at Victoria High for 18 years when the old football rivalry existed.

"It was quite amazing," she said as she took a long glance at East's bleachers. "It was packed, and the fever pitch was really high."

The fan spillover at Friday night's game was evident.

Packed bleachers on both sides forced fans to stand out by the gate - and some on the side of their rivals.

Outside, parking extended far beyond the regular parking spots.

Some vehicles even stopped in the middle of the road, let out several family members and sped off.

All the chaos was worth it for Austin Alexander and his East buddies, who cheered shirtless despite the 50 degree night.

"We're going to be the first full class," said the 14-year-old freshman as his friends hounded around him yelling spirited East chants.

Sylvia Hernandez and her husband and friends were in East's reserved seating and were also surrounded by diehard fans like themselves.

"The whole city is supporting it," Hernandez said. "I've been talking about it all week."

By the end of the first quarter, the score was Victoria East 21, Victoria West 0.

Still, that didn't stop the faith Phillips has not only in the Warriors, but also the Titans.

"That's the best thing they could have done - was split them back up," she said ringing a cowbell into the night.

  • Never fails. RedRage always going to hate on Calhoun. I think you need to change your name to DallasRage. It is painfully obvious you miss Victoria....

  • Tstorm5...I was at that Port Neches-Groves v Plano game in Texas Stadium in 1977. Plano beat my beloved Indians that afternoon. It was a loooong drive back to Houston. Pat Summerall mentioned the crowd the next day when he was announcing the Cowboys game. He thought it was a pretty amazing turnout. That was back when a high school team couldn't beat the Cowboys.

  • i know for a fact that crab nation didn't fill their stadium when they played vhs in the early 90's

crab nation, was quick to complain the next day though, complaining that vhs ran up the score on them.

    November 8, 2010 at 11:07 a.m.
  • OCL,

No disrespect, but I have to call BS on your "Crab Nation" always packing the stadium even when they were losing. I was in HS in the 90s (at VHS), but I do remember those games Stroman played against Calhoun and yall never filled the stands at Memorial Stadium like I heard yall did this year. It wasn't even half filled and its a short drive from PL to Victoria. Yall didn't start filling the stands until you all made the playoffs back in 06. I'm talking away games...it's not hard to fill that tiny stadium yall have in Port Lavaca. Sandcrab stadium only holds 6,000. What else is there to do on a Friday night in Port Lavaca?

This game had nothing to do with Calhoun, but leave it to another Calhoun fan trying to compare it to themselves like they're the standard of Texas High School football. You listen to them talk enough and you'd think they're the only team that fills stadiums lol. It's like that on every football message board they're on. They think they're the only ones that fill visitors stadiums. lol Yall need to get out more......of course you look good when comparing your fans to the fans of Rockport, Moody, Miller, etc.

Now that being said, Good luck to all 30-4A teams in the playoffs.

  • Who did the fly over the stadium in the helicopter at about 1500ft?

    November 8, 2010 at 8:19 a.m.
  • OneCrabbyLady opined that "I too find it tacky when a visiting team plays to their own fans.."

Well, who's visiting whom? Both teams are home teams. Why shouldn't the band play for ITS home team?

  • Aztan101...

Whoa...don't get your boxers in a knot. Your post agree's with my statement that under the old schools of VHS and Stroman there was a split in the town and a in your face attitude about Stroman not being as good as VHS was. There was a division between students, schools, and citizens of Victoria...allways that was ashame. What these two teams have done this year is unite the fans and citizens of Victoria in being behind BOTH teams and schools and that is a positive for all Victoria high school students.
    I hope it lasts.

As far as your comment about "Crab Nation" please allow me to clairify myself. I am well aware that Victoria teams have been to the playoffs more than Calhoun...sure hope so or we wouldn't have had the dubious distinction of being labeled as "The worst team in Texas" during those 46 years of losing. Crab Nation is strictly the fan base, not past records, not plays. We were dubbed as "Crab Nation" because of the loyalty that the fans have with our Sandcrab team. Calhoun always travels well...we pack them in at home and away and we did the same through all those decades of losses as well. The relationship between the fans and the team during our games is another thing that "the nation" is known for...our team listens to our fans and they will often signal the fans from the field when they need our help pull them through .

I must admit though it has been a lot more fun since we started winning and making the playoffs. My comment was about all the record number of fans that overflowed Memorial Stadium...proud, challenging, having a feeling of excitement that united the divisions of the past...and I think that is exciting for all Victoria fans.

  • These aren't VISD employees getting paid to do concessions. They are band parents who volunteer their time. I'm sure the did the best they could do considering they have never handled a crowd of 15,000.

    November 7, 2010 at 10:42 p.m.
  • robert, I agree about the concessions. I had an insulin shock problem Friday night and if it hadnt been for the little portable trailer at the end of the stadium, I might be in a coma now. some how the can of juice that I usually carry fell out of my purse in my car unbeknownst to me. The lines were long and I am here to tell you that most folks in line were so discourteous in allowing someone to get up to a window in an emergency. When I was growing up, yes there were vendors selling drinks in the staduim seating area. Usually one or the other of the clubs on campus and the prices were a little higher but the organization made the extra few cents. I think our next bond election should be either a newer and bigger stadium or an expansion and revamping of this one.

    November 7, 2010 at 9:30 p.m.
  • overall, concession operations need to be revamped.

    1. people walking the stands, selling drinks

    2. bigger concessions stands, with more windows

    3. better training for the people working the windows. (math training)

  • Welcome to the "magic" that is felt in "Crab Nation"...feels goooooddddd don't it!

Riiiiiight...lol. I dont know if you know it but Victoria schools have more playoff appearences... just sayin...

As far as the ghetto thing and the realty thing those are all true anyone that asked about houses, including myself, were told not to buy on that side that was going to be the Stroman side (this was of course before the wheels started to turn on the new schools) and were pushing for homes on the West side.

Its all good, In the end VHS and SHS alums are working together at both schools to make this as successful as it has started out to be not because of the school board, not because of the chamber of commerce, but because of the parents and students and the communities that support them.

Those who remember the past and the SOS movement have been waiting for the day that we can give our kids that feeling of being part of a good cross town rivalry! Its been way too long living in that nightmare that was memorial, draining all the tradition and life from this city.

on November 5th 2010 the life and light came back Ten fold.

Welcome Back Victoria... My old friend.

    November 6, 2010 at 11:46 p.m.
  • I'm with you good times...Memorial Stadium is home to both teams..."Visitor" just can't be removed from the scoreboard. I too find it tacky when a visiting team plays to their own fans...(Ray does that) but somehow the way it went down Friday night seems very fair. I think it might have been equally nice for each band to play to the other schools fan base...that way everyone in Victoria would have had the chance to see both of their Victoria schools program.

I also wanted to give a bit of perspective to the fans of both teams...since I am not from Victoria. In my unbiased observations...through all the chatter I have read this season and all the talk I have heard coming out of Victoria, did NOT get the impression that Victoria East were ever thought of as the underdogs or "getto." If fact it has appeared as though Victoria East had taken the place of VHS and West had been labeled as Stromans replacement...just wanted to put that out there.

Finally...don't know about any of the rest of you...but I have lived in Calhoun County for 50 years...my family were all in the field of education at CCISD and I can't even remember the time that we have not attended Sandcrab games. We played both Stroman and Victoria High every year until Memorial was formed and you all moved to 5A...that said, through all of those years...VHS (and I remember when it was the ONLY high school) as the established campus was always the favorite among Victorians. Stroman never got the same type of recognition as the Stings...leaving us with the fact that there WAS a clear cross town rivialery.

What is different this year is that they are both new schools...neither of which get to carry on the legacy of either of the old schools...they instead are creating their own...and have done an outstanding job this season. The difference is that this change has united the fans of Victoria...and that magic and excitement poured out into the stadium on Friday night. Enjoy it...embrace it and both teams and ride that train as long as you can. Good luck to both teams in the Playoffs...you guys show those other schools that this is not a weak district.

    November 6, 2010 at 11:21 p.m.
  • This is not VHS/SHS times anymore. It is time for new traditions and good friendly rivalary. Don't look for the bad in everything, look for the good. When you have an overflow crowd at the stadium and both team are from the same town, it does not make sense for half of the crowd to have a halftime show and the other half to just see the backsides. I think this was a great decision for the bands and dance teams to be able to perform for their "home fans". I know for a fact that this decision involved BOTH of the school's administations, and I applaude the decision. I hope this becomes a tradition!

    November 6, 2010 at 10:47 p.m.
  • To anyone who says the East side school is ghetto IT IS NOT! The communities surrounding the school are burning tree, fleetwood, riata, water stone, colony creek (country club), eagle creek, belltower, oak haven, cimeron and hamlet. Believe me this side of town is far from being ghetto. I can not believe they are starting the rivalry between the schools its just wrong. It promotes violence in our town because the name calling and the fighting comes when you pit one school against another.

    November 6, 2010 at 10:12 p.m.
  • I don't have any facts to back this up...but I would almost bet that the reason the West Band and dancers did not perform to the home side is somehow linked to the dance team. DJ's "legacy" lives on!

Can someone find out the reason?

    November 6, 2010 at 8:52 p.m.
  • Labrat, I was also surprised that West played to the visitors side. I've never seen a HS football game where the visitors didn't play to the home stands. I overheard lots of negative comments about it, even some boo's. If there was a legit reason for this, I would like to hear it, otherwise I tend to agree with those saying "childish and classless." Personally, I was looking forward to seeing the Legacy dance team preform. I know those girls have endured alot this season and I applaud those who've stayed with it and stuck it out. I'm sad to have missed their preformance.

    November 6, 2010 at 6:48 p.m.
  • This is really getting funny. All I did was say that I thought that the prime reason for building the new schools was to ease overcrowding and therefore improve the quality of the educational opportunities in Victoria. I've been called "noise" and the "village idiot". So much for civil discussion here at the Advocate!

    November 6, 2010 at 6:01 p.m.
  • Was a great game and atmosphere. One thing: I was very surprised about the West halftime show not facing the Home Side. The visitors always face the home side. That's how it was back in the VHS/SHS days. Many people who were neutral, sat on the home side so they can enjoy the half time show of both schools. I wonder who made that decision. In my opinion, that was in bad taste.

    November 6, 2010 at 2:22 p.m.
  • Wildcats78: People from your district were the one's bad mouthing West.

    November 6, 2010 at 12:40 p.m.
  • YOMUDA: Don't even start mentioning this crap. You can be rivals without doing stuff like that.

    November 6, 2010 at 12:36 p.m.
  • The Advocate needs to STOP being bias as is so noticeable. When Victoria West Volleyball team won District, they received a small article in the paper but when East wins something, they are put on the front with a spread. How bias is the Editor?

    November 6, 2010 at 12:32 p.m.
  • I'm still proud of Victoria West. They are a good school with good students. The coach needed to have better plays then he did. The coach needs to do better with plays. The Warriors Band is Awesome:)

    November 6, 2010 at 12:29 p.m.
  • Congratulations to the City Champions, The Mighty East Titans!!!
First champions between the new schools. No one can ever take that away from ya'll. Congrats to the entire East community!!!

Now, on to the football playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!!

    November 6, 2010 at 11:53 a.m.
  • How many drive bys and fights in the parking lot? It will start soon enough.

    November 6, 2010 at 11:34 a.m.
  • Wow, what an exciting game last night. Congratulations to both teams and their supporters for being a part of this history. I was very pleased and proud to see how well the rivalry was handled. From the beginning exchange of gifts (with hugs for each other) to the very end when some of the West’s student body came out on field to be with the Titans players and student body. (very respectfully they came out after the initial award presentation). It was just awesome to see. We definitely were not in a hurry to leave the stadium! The halftime performances were good too. I have to admit I thought the East Golden Sabers dance team gave one of their best performances, and their uniforms really looked good!
I did want to comment on the fact the some of the East supporters have made comments about being the underdogs. What I take from this comment is that from the very beginning when the boundary lines were drawn, and then when coaches/directors started being named for each high school there was talk about which school was going to be better for whatever reason. I heard many times from community and students that “West was going to be better” and that East was the ghetto side of town etc.” My husband and I heard this, my son and his friends heard this. This was also reported by realtors in town when people were looking for homes. So I feel that the East High School felt like it needed to validate itself in someway. And for the East Titans I think that it makes winning the District and City championship that much sweeter! Considering these were views imposed on them not warranted or ask for. Certainly not justified.
That being said I hope that the community and the students can support each other and VISD in the future and that our public schools continue to improve in all areas so that you can ultimately be proud to tell someone that you go to Victoria East or West High School!!
Good luck to all of the Victoria and surrounding area teams in the various sports/playoffs!
Most of all GO TITANS!!!! Represent Victoria well!!!!

    November 6, 2010 at 11:31 a.m.
  • patb, have you talked with parent's of students from both schools ?

i have and they have a lot of positive things to say about both schools. sure there were growing pains with 'breaking in' the new schools, but im hearing very good things over all.

    November 6, 2010 at 10:33 a.m.
  • user,
WHOA!!!! Village idiot? Just because I don't think that football is the be-all and end-all that defines a town? AND,I'm not a teacher. How did you get that from my post?
    Patrick T. Barnes

    November 6, 2010 at 10:22 a.m.
  • I will be the "voice crying in the wilderness". I was hoping that the reason that we voted for a @159,000,000 bond issue to build new schools was to improve the quality of education for future generations of Victoria youths. It appears that this may not be exactly true. It's which school wins the BIG GAME that matters. Sad.

    November 6, 2010 at 7:21 a.m.
  • Congrats to both teams Well Done

Having said that I seem to recall that our school board years ago consolidated our two high schools in order to eliminate cross town rivalry ..... it being so bad.

    November 6, 2010 at 6:45 a.m.
  • We definately love our TITANS and are very proud of them! For months they had to listen to how they were the "underdogs" and they were the "GHETTO" team. I am sooo glad we have surpassed that title!!! Warriors, you did and awesome job tonight as well. Even though we are rivals, we are friends!!!

    November 6, 2010 at 2:56 a.m.
  • I am so proud of the victoria East team! They have played there hearts out! It does feel good to win district!

    November 6, 2010 at 12:12 a.m.
  • What an thrilling season it has been for fans in Victoria..for both East and West. This has been an electric week for football fans...so much so that we could feel it all the way down south in Calhoun County and the fans that broke a new record in Memorial Stadium tonight could almost be faintly heard. Congratulations to both teams...and to East for their District win. Welcome to the "magic" that is felt in "Crab Nation"...feels goooooddddd don't it!
