Day Trippin': Houston's Impulse Artist Series fuses music, art

Trumpeter Suresh Singaratnam is one of the featured musicians at Houston's Impulse Artists Series: The Altar Ego Season event takes place through the weekend all across the city.


These ain't your momma's classical musicians.

The Impulse Artist Series: The Altar Ego Season is going on throughout the weekend in Houston and features classically trained musicians in a whole new light, according to a news release.

With concerts held in different venues each night, all around the city, the event fuses music and the visual arts and features solo recitals and chamber concerts of new and emerging musicians and music students. Whether using toy pianos and electronics as instruments, or bringing together rock and classical scores, each performance is unique, according to the news release.

The schedule of events includes:

Thursday: Brandee Younger (harp) and Suresh Singaratnam (trumpet) combine their talents of hip hop and jazz for a concert from 6:30-8 p.m. in The Tasting Room, 1101-18 Uptown Park Blvd. Cost is $30 and reservations can be made by calling 713-993-9800.

Friday: Pianist Kris Becker brings his original rock, jazz and nu-classical works to the Wade Wilson Art venue, 4411 Montrose, Suite 200, from 7-9 p.m. General admission is $25.

In addition, musician Phyllis Chen will play her assorted instruments, which include a toy piano, electronics and a frying pan, from 9:30-11:30 p.m. at Avant Garden, 411 Westheimer. This event is free to the public.

Saturday: Suresh Singaratnam will give another performance from 7-9 p.m. at Wade Wilson Art. Cost is $25.

Prior to Singaratnam's performance, a free Young Artist Showcase and Family Concert will be held at the venue from 3 to 5 p.m.
