Victoria residents are gearing up to honor veterans on Thursday.

"It's in recognition of what they've done and what they're doing for us," Victoria County Veterans Council member Peter Riesz said. "These guys are putting their lives on the line every day for us, and we think it's important to remember that."

The veterans council organizes the Veterans Day events each year.

This year's Veterans Day celebration will begin with a flag blessing ceremony at 7:30 a.m. on the steps of the Victoria County Courthouse, 111 N. Glass Street.

The Rev. Stan De Boe, pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, will bless the assembled flags.

Teams of veterans will then place the flags at 32 city and county cemeteries, Riesz said.

Those scheduled to march in the Veterans Day Parade will begin assembling at 8 a.m. There are 70 entries in the parade this year, Riesz said.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the Victoria Community Center, 2905 E. North Street.

The parade, complete with color guard, will go down North Street, turning right at Ben Wilson Street and return to the community center.

Parking will be available at Stroman Middle School.

The parade will be followed by the Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the community center.

State Rep. Geanie Morrison is scheduled to speak at the ceremony and Gary Moses will emcee the event, Riesz said.

Those attending the celebration will also hear the Toast of the Coast Barbershop Chorus perform the national anthem and other selected songs.

The Victoria West High School band is also scheduled to perform for the celebration.
