  • Don't need to kiss up, like you said, he is gone. I'm just stateing the facts. Vance changed this department for the better, by the way I still have a couple of those "sparky" shirts if you want one.

  • How do you think I know about the T-shirts. I even have a couple of them. Just stay off-shore. The VFD has protocols for a reason.

  • I would hope that DaveNewman is joking because we know that a flight medic would be highly qualified as a fire chief...(sarcasm noted). Vance Riley has done a lot for this City, let us not forget that. The City has already gotten 1 new fire station with another on the way. The City now has a bike team, an Honor Guard, and continuous training to keep the VFD in step with the National Guidelines for both fire and EMS. JackDeuce had it spot on when he said that the way Fire/EMS is trending for the future is to cross-train. But justobserving was in error when he stated that they were forced to cross train. Those who worked there previously before the cross training were not forced to. They were grandfathered in and could finish their career doing what they preferred. If you don't want to be someone who can help others in any capacity, why join a public service dept? God bless all the firemen and may they find another leader who will continue to lead them down the right road and continue into the future of Fire/EMS.

  • I worked for the Chief for several years (retired) and even with our disagreements, he moved (dragged) the department screaming and kicking into the 20th century. I often disagreed with him, but I truly think he wanted the best for VFD. He is not a people person, but he did update our safety equipment and apparatus.

  • I'm with you Sparkman. Vance Riley couldn't leave soon enough! He never really appeared to be behind the paramedics, him being a fireman and all. Years ago the medics were basically forced to be cross-trained to be firefighters which a lot did not want to do. He has turned great medics with superb skills into glorified taxi drivers over the years and a great many have left because they were not allowed to use their skills. May the almighty paramedic Gods shine brightly once again on Victoria County and bring us someone who truly wants a paramedic to be a paramedic.

  • It's really sad that a disgruntled ex employee cannot just leave without trying to continue to stir up trouble for the city fire dept. This 800,000 mistake that you claim Vance made - well, shame on you. As you well know, Vance could not have made any decisions without consulting HR and that dept would have had to approve it. When I first moved here, several years ago, this fire dept was hurting for paramedics. Vance Riley has worked with the fire dept to ensure that the Citizens of Victoria had paramedics to cover them for any injuries and illnesses. Now there is an abundance of paramedics. I feel safe knowing that the fire dept would be taking care of me and my loved ones. There are several firefighters who have been there for several years, some even hitting retirement age. The ones that leave usually do so to pursue a career in a bigger town- not because of the dept itself. Now that you no longer work there, Sparkman, why don't you just shut up and let the man leave with dignity.

  • Chief Riley chose that leadership Jon. Chief Riley did ALOT of great things for the department and for the citizens of Victoria. Sparky Firefighting would still be going on today if it wasn't for him.
