Poet and activist E. Ethelbert Miller's appearance as the speaker for the American Book Review reading series on Friday has been canceled due to a death in the family, according to a University of Houston-Victoria news release.

The Washington, D.C.-based writer was scheduled to be the final speaker in the fall reading series. He is the author of 11 books and editor of four anthologies. His most recent book, "The Fifth Inning," is his second memoir, his first being 2000's "Fathering Words: The Making of an African American Writer."

He also sits on several boards that deal with and promote literature and social justice. He is the board chairman for the Institute for Policy Studies and a board member of The Writer's Center.

As of Monday afternoon, it is not known if his talk will be rescheduled.
