Police could hire more officers through grant

Oct. 1, 2010 at 5:01 a.m.

The Victoria Police Department could hire five more police officers thanks to a grant they received through the U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program.

The $941,215 grant would pay for entry-level salaries and benefits for three years for newly-hired, full-time sworn officers, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.

The city would be responsible for the officer salaries after the third year, so the award isn't a done deal, said Police Chief Bruce Ure.

The grant is set to be discussed at the Oct. 19 city council meeting.
