A Victoria College nursing student and her family were devastated when a fire destroyed their home recently. Without renter's insurance to cover their losses, the family needed help.
That's when the VC Proud - Students Helping Students, a newly formed random-act-of-kindness organization, stepped in and asked the community to donate cash, furniture or other household necessities to help their fellow student.
"This is exactly what VC Proud does, we help our fellow students," said VC student Kathryn Wilson. "We want to help make sure that students who find themselves in difficult situations don't have to sacrifice their education."
Lack's Furniture donated a queen-size mattress, Mattress Depot donated a bunk-bed and mattresses and JCPenney donated the bedding. The St. Vincent Association donated a $150 gift card to the VC bookstore to help replace the student's books and other materials.
Donations have also been received from Old Navy, Bath and Body Works, CPAT Ministries and Pacific Sun Wear. In addition, friends, relatives and members of VC's faculty and staff have donated cash and other furniture items. VC's Campus Ambassadors also collected donations and VC student Helen Soto made the family a quilt.
