Man dies from apparent suicide in Yoakum jail

YOAKUM - The Texas Rangers are investigating the death of a 22-year-old Yoakum man, who died in the city jail Monday night.

A Yoakum police officer found Micheal Harrell hanging in the cell, according to news release from the Yoakum Police Department. DeWitt County Justice of the Peace Bill Robinson pronounced Harrell dead on the scene at 9 p.m. Monday and ordered an autopsy. Harrell's body was sent to the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office.

Harrell had been arrested Monday afternoon on a felony theft warrant from Polk County and for possession of a controlled substance, according to the news release.

He was awaiting transfer to the Lavaca County jail.
