Gomez, Keller strong in West win over East
Garrett Gomez was already elated that he'd won his doubles match.
"We got our shots in and we did really well on our forehands," said the senior for Victoria West. "I'm just glad that we won."
Then, more jubilation. A friend came up and grabbed Gomez in celebration. That player, Chase Bennett, had won his doubles match.
He jumped up and down with glee.
"We won, we won!" he said.
Winning for both teams has been a problem this season.
"It's been really rough this year, because we haven't gotten our heads in the game this year," he said. "We had a big struggle earlier but we've been getting better as the year progresses."
Victoria East and Victoria West were both 0-4 heading into their matchup Thursday, one that was originally slated to be played at the West campus but was moved because the courts aren't finished.
In the battle of District 30-4A's bottom schools, the Warriors came out on top with strong performances from Gomez in both singles and doubles, and from its doubles teams, which took five of seven matchups.
Things stayed friendly between the teams. Players not on the court acted as though they weren't playing for different teams.
But that didn't mean they weren't looking to win.
"I always tell my friends, 'we're coming for y'all,' we're going to be you," Gomez said.
Along with Gomez, who won his singles match hands down over Steven Serna 6-0, 6-0 and his doubles match with Josh Stoeltje 6-1, 6-0 over East's Quincy Davis and Joseph Ureste, junior Victoria Keller also turned in a strong day for the Warriors.
Keller swept her singles opponent Aubrey Bleier 6-1, 6-1, and also won her doubles match with partner Nicole Cobler 6-2, 6-2 over Bleier and Aurieanna Anderson.
It's been a season of lows for the Titans, who remain winless.
"I think we've practically lost them all," Steven Serna said. "Against Calhoun last week, we won some."
Both coaches said the games they are playing in the fall aren't totally about winning.
"It's been a tough season after splitting the team apart. They really wanted to come out with a win today," said Warriors coach Lauren Janak.
East coach Crystal January said the first part of this year has been about dealing with the shortcomings left from splitting the Memorial team.
"It's been a big adjustment," she said. "Kids are playing with different players. This time period is kind of an adjustment period for everybody."
January said the Titans have put in a lot of work, especially the players that are new to the game that are playing, and she was hopeful for the spring.
"We've improved since the start of the season, definitely," she said. "They come out here and they work hard. We've won some games, but we haven't won a whole match.
"Overall, they're improving and we're getting ready for the spring. I think we'll do a lot better then."
