Name: Mark S. Ivey

Age: 49

City/county of residence: Hallettsville, Lavaca County

Party Affiliation: Write-In

Occupation: Businessman/rancher/reserve police officer

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

It's time to demand that our public officials trim their expenses just like private citizens are being forced to do in this difficult economy. Having worked in law enforcement for 21 years, I thrive on helping my fellow citizens and neighbors. In carrying out the duties of justice of the peace, I am confident that Lavaca County residents would benefit from my experience and even-handed application of the law.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

The majority of my career has been spent in law enforcement, with 21 years as a lieutenant deputy constable specializing in civil law and the preparation and serving of criminal warrants. In addition, I currently serve as a Hallettsville reserve patrol police officer. My experience gives me a strong working knowledge of how the office of justice of the peace should be run.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

As one of only two full-time justices of the peace in Lavaca County, my office will be open daily to conduct the business of Precinct No. 1. I plan to execute my duties on a full-time basis, being fair and honest, treating all with dignity and respect. Working as a good steward of the office, economically and operationally, I will offer community service options and will open once a week to hold evening court.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

A native Texan with strong ties to Lavaca County, I am a proud landowner and family man with deep conservative and Republican values. Employed with Coca-Cola Company for 34 years, I also serve as reserve patrol police officer for the Hallettsville Police Department. I would be honored to serve you, the citizens of Lavaca County, as your next Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1.

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

As our community grows, the justice of the peace plays a more important role in the essential works of the local government and society in general. Many things, ranging from evictions and accidental deaths to truancy and small claims comes before this court. Attention to these items by a qualified local person who knows the people of Lavaca County and is formally trained in evidence and due process is very important to the participants.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I am a seventh generation Lavaca County resident. I know the people of Lavaca County because I come from that stock and their conservative values are my values. I have years of experiences as an attorney and am a familiar presence in our local courts. I have dealt with complex issues of evidence and due process ("fair treatment") in a legal setting many times. I am singularly the most qualified candidate for this position.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

I will be available during regular office hours to the public and quickly accessible to authorities during odd hours of the day or night for unscheduled inquests, warrants and emergency magistrations. By having my home in Hallettsville, I can be at the office of the justice of the peace, Precinct 1 within minutes of an emergency requiring my presence. Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

Lavaca County is a fiscally sound county that has elected Democrats to office consistently since the 1880s. We have beautiful small towns not overrun with criminals. Our schools are safe and our good people can walk at night fearlessly. We should do what is prudent, reasonable and necessary to keep it that way.
