Intruders 'savagely' beat man in apartment

A burglary and assault at Summerstone Apartments sent one man to the hospital a little after midnight on Wednesday.

A 17-year-old man was "savagely" struck on the head with a shotgun by one of two intruders at his apartment at 2107 N. Ben Jordan Street, said Victoria Police Chief Bruce Ure.

Two armed men wearing blue bandanas over their faces busted in the locked apartment door and drug the victim to his bedroom. Ure said the bandanas are not necessarily gang-related.

The suspects demanded $1,000 and beat the victim when he denied having it.

Another 17-year-old man in the apartment was able to escape out of a window and was chased by one of the intruders, Ure said.

That man jumped over a fence, and the two suspects then left in a gray or black compact vehicle with a small amount of cash.

The owner of the apartment was taken to Citizen's Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

The incident is still under investigation.
