Calhoun, Industrial win Army Strong awards

Calhoun running back Jeremy Loya carries the ball against Cuero earlier this season.

Wins by Calhoun and Industrial over previously unbeaten teams last Friday night drew notice around the state.

Jeremy Loya rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns on only 10 carries to help the Sandcrabs claim a 33-30 District 30-4A road win over Gregory-Portland.

Kade Smith kicked a 38-yard field goal in the second overtime to lift the Cobras to a 17-14 victory over Edna.

The upsets were not only beneficial for Calhoun's and Industrial's playoff and district title hopes.

The Sandcrabs and Cobras were also named the Army Strong Team of the Week by Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine.

Calhoun was selected for the Class 4A award and Industrial was chosen for the Class 2A award.

The award will be presented to each school later this week by a representative of the U.S. Army.
