TIPSAnyone with information about Rechard Sammons Griffin's death is asked to contact the Cuero Police Department at 361-277-3552 or after hours at 361-275-5734. Information can also be provided to the DeWitt County Crime Stoppers at 361-275-0880.

CUERO - Robert Naranjo said he came home to a "nightmare" Monday.

After a weekend out of town, the 21-year-old walked in the house he shared with his mom to find she had been killed.

"She's still here. I still feel her," he said Tuesday night.

Cuero police are still looking for the person they believe to be involved in the death of 45-year-old Rechard Sammons Griffin in the 400 block of East Alexander Street.

They aren't releasing many details about the case for fear of hindering the investigation.

But Naranjo was eager to talk about his mother.

Naranjo used the word "devoted" over and over again to describe Griffin, who had two other children - Lacey Sammons, 29, and Daniel Molina, 26.

"She was such a hard worker. That's what she did. She worked and just dedicated herself to her family," Naranjo said.

Griffin worked as a personal assistant at Eling Corporation and spent her time off caring for her dogs and plants, he said.

Naranjo also repeated the words "tough" and "survivor" when remembering his mom.

He said Griffin had beat cancer years earlier, healed from back surgery just last week and quit smoking after 28 years.

"So she could live longer to be around us," Naranjo said.

Griffin had five grandchildren that were "her world," he said.

Naranjo said he could talk to his mom about anything and appreciated that she valued his opinion on everything from her clothes to hair color.

"People say you don't know what you have until you lose it," Naranjo said. "But I knew what I had."

Capt. Steven Ellis, the interim police chief, said the department has a suspect and expects to release more information about the crime later this week.

A news release said police believe Griffin knew her attacker.

Family members saw her vehicle, a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe with the license plate number BX6-G617, leave her home Friday night. It has since been reported stolen.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Freund Funeral Home.
