• Riverboat - not quite. NE Houston for me. Meh, in the scheme of things, just a stone's throw away from each other, though...

  • The Pixie Stick guy spoiled Halloween here in Victoria too. I don't remember him being called the candyman tho. That was what they called Dean Corll, another Houston monster.

  • Riverboat, you are so right.

Are you sure we didn't grow up down the street from each other?

I well remember this, as it put the kibosh on Halloween for me and other kids in my neighborhood, too. My grandparents, who lived next door, decided to make an annual event of a Halloween party they would host for the neighborhood children and their parents. We would have a costume contest, bobbing for apples, and other fun things that I remember enjoying every year and knew that I would be safe. To tell you the truth, I didn't really miss trick-or-treating after that. But it pops up in my mind every year. I don't have children, but if I did, because of that one monster, I believe I would not let them trick-or-treat. I would be terrified of what could end up in their stash. I believe I would choose to do something along the lines of what my grandparents did, and host a party along with other friends and neighbors. You know, people you can trust.

But if a child can't trust his own greedy father, then what has this world come to? It was a dark moment for Houston, and for childhood innocence, for sure.

  • Parents still should check the candy their children receive. Many years ago, an elderly couple accidentally got some of their heart medication mixed in with the candy they were handing out. Luckily a parent noticed the bubble packaging before the child got it.

  • Feralia? Pomona? Aren't they twin sisters with some gig on Bourbon street in New Orleans? And Samhain---doesn't he own a truckstop along Interstate 10 just over the state line in Louisiana?
