Roma man killed in head-on collision on U.S. 77
REFUGIO - A Roma man was killed after a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler on U.S. Highway 77 early Thursday morning.
Jose M. Jaime-Escobedo, 20, was heading north on U.S. Highway 77 about eight miles south of state Highway 239 when he overcorrected his Chevrolet Impala, went into a side skid into the southbound lane and crashed into an 18-wheeler, said Cpl. David Poland, with the Department of Public Safety in Refugio.
After crashing into the 18-wheeler, his vehicle rolled off to the side and caught fire, the officer said.
The collision happened at about 5 a.m., Poland said.
The driver of the 18-wheeler refused treatment, but did have some pain to his leg, Poland said.
Poland is still investigating why Jaime-Escobedo overcorrected.
"It's a possibility he fell asleep," he said. "But we're not 100 percent sure of that."
The wreck forced southbound traffic to be detoured throughout the morning down state Highway 239 to either Goliad or Tivoli, he said.
