Relatively Speaking: Texas Tracers planning annual trip to Salt Lake City
By Martha Jones
Have you been considering a research trip to Salt Lake City? If so, the Texas Tracer 2011 trip June 5-14 might be just the opportunity you've been hoping for. The Tracers have been traveling to SLC since 1999 and look forward to our return in 2011. We are known by our name and our signature Tracer logo with the detective tracing footsteps of our family histories, from Texas to Utah. We have red Texas Tracer T-shirts for travel and various colored ones with our logo for other days. Needless to say, packing is a breeze since we are not slaves to fashion, only to our Texas Tracer T-shirts and jeans.
The Family History Library in SLC is the largest genealogical library in the world. Here, we have access to more than two million rolls of microfilm (more than 142,000 square feet on five floors), hundreds of thousands of microfiche and a huge collection of genealogical books. The library opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. every day except Monday, when it closes at 5 p.m. It is closed on Sundays when we are privileged to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square in the morning service, Music and the Spoken Word.
This year, the Texas Tracers will be flying non-stop from Austin to SLC and will have eight days to research, plus an enjoyable side trip to either Park City or Provo, Utah, where we will tour the Ancestry.com headquarters and the Brigham Young University Library.
On Monday morning, the Family History Library has planned an orientation for new and returning researchers. We learn something new each year because new resources are added each day in the FHL. Library assistants and Latter-Day Saints missionaries are there to help library patrons by answering questions and assisting researchers with genealogical and computer problems. On Monday evening, after the Family History Library closes, we will have a genealogy seminar at the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel on U.S. Civil War Sources with former manager of the Family History Library, Jimmie Parker.
From Tuesday until Sunday, we will research each day and take time on Thursday evening to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearse from 8 to 9:30 p.m. What a delight.
I have booked our hotel reservations in the Salt Lake Plaza that is just around the corner from the Family History Library. We will be flying Delta Airlines direct from Austin for the roundtrip. The cost will be only slightly higher than last year: $1,280 for doubles and $1,585 for singles. This includes airfare, hotel, genealogy seminar, tour and transportation to and from the hotel. The only thing it doesn't include is food. Since I have already booked our plane tickets, I need a $200 deposit by Nov. 20. Please send your check, payable to Martha Jones, to 506 W. Larkspur St., Victoria, TX 77904-2642.
E-mail genealogy queries to firstname.lastname@example.org. VCGS members will research queries requiring extensive study.
