Conference to cover classroom technology trends

With today's tech-savvy youth, teachers may sometimes feel as though they are the students.
But the 2010 Library Technology Mini-Conference, set from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the University of Houston-Victoria, will help teachers get a leg up on technology trends in the classroom, said Dennis Riedesel, a UHV associate professor in the School of Education & Human Development.
The conference will feature 20 presentations held throughout UHV's University Center and University West buildings, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.
Vendors will also be set up in the University Center Multi-Purpose Room. Librarians, library paraprofessionals, technology directors, teachers and UHV faculty, staff and students are invited to attend.
"All the new technology offers educators many different options to reach students in ways that keep them interested," Riedesel said. "This conference will showcase some of the classroom options available to teachers and librarians."
Riedesel said the conference is presented in two parts.
"One is the librarian component because in many schools, the librarian is the custodian of the technology equipment," he said. "But it is also for any type of librarian professional who uses technology to process the library's book checkout system or has computers in the library for students to use."
The second, he said, is the educational technology component, which includes social media, blogs, podcasting, whiteboards, iPods and more.
"These tools are the chalk and blackboard of our generation," Riedesel said. "It's important that we continue to train ourselves as educators on the use of these different tools for teaching."
Sessions include "Top 10 Must-Do's for Technology Leadership Professionals," "There's an App for That," "Integrating World Book Technology in the Classroom" and "Power Up Your Curriculum: Finding and Using Digital Information."
Other sessions address "The Power of Puppets" and "The Remedy for Information Overload."
The event is sponsored by UHV, Texas Computer Education Association Area III and the Region III Education Service Center. The conference cost is $50 for nonmembers of specific Region III cooperatives, free for members of those cooperatives, and $10 for college and university students.
