Is there life after 50? You bet your sweet patootie there is.

Thus is the basis of the comedy "Hats! The Musical," which is coming to Bastrop Opera House in Austin this month. Inspired by the stories, experiences and mission of the nationwide Red Hat Society, the toe-tapping original show is about a 49.999-year-old woman who is reluctantly facing her 50th birthday, until she meets a group of women who teach her how to embrace the landmark event with laughter, friendship and, of course, sequins, according to the Bastrop Opera House website.

The show also features a score by some of Broadway's most well-known and beloved songwriters, as well as Grammy, Golden Globe and Tony Award-winners.

For those out of the loop, the very real Red Hat Society is a network of women from all walks of life dedicated to showing the world that there is life and fun during your golden years. Its mission is to reshape the way older women are viewed by today's culture, and the society currently has more than 40,000 chapters in all 50 states, as well as in more than 30 countries, according to the website.

"Hats! The Musical" will run Sept. 16-26. Tickets are $12 for adults; $10 for seniors; $8 for high school and college students, active military and veterans and $5 for all children 14 and under. Tickets are available by calling 512-321-6283 or online at www.bastropoperahouse.com.
