PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Two cruise ships will be spending some extra time in the Portland, Maine, harbor so they won't be at sea when Hurricane Earl passes by.

he Independence, with about 100 passengers, had been scheduled to arrive in Portland Friday afternoon, but it arrived overnight to avoid the storm.

WMTW-TV says the other ship, the Explorer of the Seas with about 3,000 passengers, is due to arrive in Portland Friday afternoon. it had been scheduled to arrive in Portland Saturday.

Nicole Clegg, a spokeswoman for the city of Portland, says Portland harbor is sheltered and a safe place for vessels to ride out the storm.

Forecasters say Earl will pass through the area late Friday.
