GOLIAD - The Presidio La Bahia Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas is gearing up for its first full year in operation.
The Goliad-based chapter was chartered in January with the help of its founding president, Linda Austin.
At a business meeting Sunday, members planned out the activities in which the chapter would participate in the upcoming fiscal year.
Those include parades, the Taste of Goliad, the Goliad Massacre Re-enactment, an essay contest and the district and state conventions, among others.
"Our goal is to promote Texas history," Austin said. "That's what we're about."
Austin said the chapter has 35 members so far, some living as far away as Arizona and Oklahoma.
Those members may have lived in the area and are able to prove their heritage but have since moved away, Austin said.
"Goliad is very, very historic, and they want to be a part of that," Austin said. "We're all very proud of our heritage here."
To become a member of the DRT, applicants must submit documentation proving they have direct lineal descent to a citizen or member of the military in Texas before it joined the Union in 1846.
Austin said the new chapter hopes to partner with a new chapter of the Children of the Republic of Texas, which was created in June.
Amber Angerstein, 17, is the president of that chapter.
"I think it's awesome that people can find their history and bring it back to today's time," Angerstein said on why she wanted to head the chapter.
She said the chapter has 20 members and is still planning out the events they will participate in this year.
The children's chapter is named for David Moses, who was one of the 342 men killed in the Goliad Massacre.
