Injury sidelines Chiefs' Urban

Sept. 4, 2010 at 4:04 a.m.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Jerheme Urban attempts to catch a pass while being covered by Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields on Thursday.

Jerheme Urban will have more time to spend with his wife and daughter than he originally planned.

Urban tore the flexor tender in his ring finger on his right hand during Thursday night's preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.

Urban, a wide receiver, suffered the injury while blocking.

"It's a bummer," said Urban by phone from his Kansas City residence. "But it happened and I can't do anything about it."

Urban, a Stroman graduate, is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday and will need 10 to 12 weeks or rehabilitation.

"It's part of the game," Urban said. "Fortunately there's no pain. I'm just going to get it fixed and do what I can to help some of the younger guys get ready."

The Chiefs have placed Urban on the injured reserve list, meaning he will not be able to play this season.

Urban signed with the Chiefs as a free agent in March after spending the last three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

Urban has 87 catches for 1,231 yards in a career that started in 2003 with the Seattle Seahawks. He has played in six postseason games, including the Super Bowl.

Urban had one catch for seven yards during the preseason.

"Hopefully, I'm a fast healer," Urban said, "and I can begin training by late November or early December."
