A Placedo house in the 190 block of Park Street was destroyed by a Thursday morning fire that left eight puppies dead.

PLACEDO - A fire destroyed a one-story house in the 190 block of Park Street on Thursday morning.

The Victoria Fire Department, along with the Placedo, Bloomington, Lone Tree and Telferner volunteer fire departments, all responded to put out the fire, which started about 11:30 a.m.

April Lavina, 34, and her four children had been renting the house for the past five years.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Victoria County Fire Marshal Ron Pray said the fire was "fully involved" once crews arrived on the scene.

It took firefighters more than three hours to put out the blaze, which Pray said kept re-igniting because of the amount of stuff in the house.

Putting out the blaze under hot weather conditions also proved to be difficult for the fire crews.

"Weather conditions made it extremely difficult on the firefighters," said Battalion Chief Tracy Fox with the Victoria Fire Department.

During the fire, a live wire fell to the ground; however, Victoria Electric Cooperative quickly took care of the issue.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

There were no human injuries; however, eight 5-week-old puppies that were in the home perished in the flames.

Two dogs, one of which was the mother of the dead puppies, were outside the home at the time of the fire.

They were uninjured.

The fire also caused damage to a neighbor's trailer home and truck.

Fifty-five-year-old Dickie Barnett, the property owner, said he had no insurance on the house.

Linda May, with the American Red Cross Crossroads Chapter, was on the scene to provide aid.
