An 18-wheeler spewed about 50 gallons of diesel fuel around the Houston Highway and Delmar Drive area early Tuesday morning.

According to Batallion Chief Roger Hempel, with the Victoria Fire Department, a saddle tank on the truck, which was based out of Arkansas, struck an unknown object and sustained a small rupture. The driver, unaware of the leak, drove a few blocks around the area before being stopped by a Victoria Police Department officer at Delmar Drive and Rio Grande Street at 6:19 a.m.

Hempel said the fire department poured sand on the spill and secured the area to keep the fuel from entering storm drains. They also blocked off roads to ensure drivers were not driving through the spill.

The last fire unit did not leave the scene until 12:28 p.m., he said.
