The Victoria Police Department is encouraging neighborhoods to party Tuesday night.
The Crime Prevention Unit, along with the Victoria Fire Department and Victoria County Sheriff's Office, is hosting the annual National Night Out, which aims to unite neighborhoods in an effort to reduce crime.
"The whole idea behind it is getting to know your neighbors," Sgt. Felix Appelt said. "It's about getting to know who lives around you and saying, 'you watch out for me, I'll watch out for you.'"
Last year, more than 20 neighborhoods hosted block parties in Victoria, Officer Chris Guerra said.
Law enforcement members will make rounds to the parties and provide crime prevention ideas.
"We'll ask what kind of problems they're seeing in their neighborhood and see how we can fix it," Appelt said.
At least one neighborhood, in the 1700 block of Milam Street, plans to have a potluck dinner, bounce house and DJ, said its organizer, Pat DeDear.
"It's going to be a great time and hopefully people will come out and enjoy it with us," Guerra said.
The Crime Prevention Unit will help make flyers and organize a block party for anyone interested in hosting one, Sgt. Felix Appelt said.
