The parents and other loved ones of children with Down Syndrome often are at a loss with where to turn for information or assistance.
The same held true for Victoria's Yvette Laqua when her 3-year-old niece was diagnosed with the disease.
"I looked for information locally and really couldn't find anything," Laqua said. "That's what spurred me to act."
Laqua helped form the Down Syndrome League of Victoria, a support group for parents and other loved ones with family members with Down Syndrome.
Saturday, the second annual Buddy Walk will benefit the organization, which is affiliated with the National Down Syndrome Society and held in conjunction with National Down Syndrome Awareness month.
Donations will be accepted to take part in the mile walk at Riverside Park. More than 20 teams are expected to take part.
"It's a show of support," Laqua said. "We focus on the purpose of the event."
The Buddy Walk begins with registration at 8 a.m. and opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. The walk begins at 10.
Various groups, including dance teams, a DJ and musicians, will entertain beginning at 11 a.m.
There will also be games and activities for the children.
At 3 p.m., a free concert featuring Rhythm of the Road will round out the event until 5 p.m.
