BEEVILLE - The Tri County Commercial Female Sale occurred on April 2, with an obvious improving economy and promising spring rains. Four-hundred forty-nine head were consigned from Bee, Goliad, Refugio and the surrounding counties for almost a half a million dollars. With cattle in short supply, the committee sought cattle tirelessly to be able to offer ranchers quality cattle.

Thanks to all the ranches in the area that consigned high-quality cattle to the Seventh Annual Tri County Commercial Female Sale and to the buyers, who bid on the cattle. Also thank you to Leo Casas III for auctioneering and special thanks to the volume buyers: Frank Helvely, Setliff Brothers and Gary West, of La Bonda Ranch LLC.

Averages: pairs $1,670; breds $1,307; and open or exposed heifers $921. The Female Sale is committed to the youth in the Tri County area and again plans to make a $1,000 donation to each county 4-H program as it did last year, which totals almost $23,000.

Bob Gayle, who engineered the idea of the sale more than seven years ago, said, "I think it is a 'win-win' for everyone involved. Not only are producers profiting from the added dollars, but they can also feel assured that they are helping the youth when they consign."

Cattle judges were Melvin Scherer, Meyersville; Clay Neel, Refugio; and Maurice Janda, Gonzales, who placed the sale order. Thanks too, to our sponsors: Ag Med Supply, Beeville Livestock Commission, Capital Farm Credit, and Lyssy and Eckel Feeds and Silveus Insurance Group.

Committeemen, including myself, who covered all the ground work, are Jim Bluntzer, Rodney Butler, Pat Calhoun, Leo Casas, Bob Gayle, Jerry Gray and Clay Neel.
