Victoria West coach Manuel Alvarado wasn't sure how his team would respond to its one-run loss to Victoria East.

Alvarado's concern grew when Beeville's Colt Burchett hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning off starter Miles Manning.

But the Warriors put their coach at ease by scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first and going on to a 12-2 District 30-4A win in a game stopped in the bottom of the sixth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule late Tuesday night at Riverside Stadium.

"We had to try and get back on the right track," Alvarado said. "I was glad the kids responded. We wanted to get back to what we've been doing."

Manning settled down after a shaky first inning and allowed only an infield single in the next five innings.

Manning had 13 strikeouts and retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced.

"Miles was getting the ball up in the first inning," Alvarado said. "But he came back and did a good job getting back into it."

The Warriors (13-6, 3-1) sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first.

Zach Valenzuela batted twice in the inning and had a single and a three-run home run.

"We had to come back and prove something," Valenzuela said. "We were coming off an emotional game. We wanted to get back out on the field and show what we could do."

The Warriors had only six hits, but the Trojans (9-10, 0-4) contributed to their undoing by committing five errors, issuing eight walks, and numerous wild pitches and passed balls.

"We were able to get the W," Alvarado said. "We need to work on some little things at practice with our approach at the plate."
