  • Does COV have a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy?

    April 8, 2011 at 9:05 a.m.
  • Sounds like someone was "pokin' fun" and someone took it seriously.

If the walls could talk, oh the stories they would tell.

Actually, this is starting to sound like a Ray Stevens song... don't look Ethel!!

    Who needs soap operas?

  • anonyme...Wow. That musta been SOME dance!

    April 8, 2011 at 7:53 a.m.
  • I lost my career as a teacher because I told a girl she could get pregnant the way she was dancing. It was an off-hand comment meant as a subtle retribution. Welcome to the liberal ideal, firefighters. PFG is hiring for warehouse- that's where I'm at now.

  • Remember the Drew Carey show? The episode about the crinkle cut french fry and the caterpillar?

Some characters in the show thought it was funny some didn't, it pointed out the fact of how workplaces have now become politically correct.

  • Kinda gives a new meaning to hoseholders!

  • I'm just wonderin' here. I've seen several calendars for fund raisers with fire fighters (all male) posing without their shirts. Is that sexual harassment, too?

Roberttx...Nobody has said anything about anybody slapping anybody's butt or otherwise copping a feel. No, something like that is NOT okay. But that hasn't been alledged.

The article above uses the term "sexually suggestive photographs." What's that? It sounds like a term that is defined by the person viewing the picture. I've known ladies who enjoyed hardcore porn and I've known some who can get offended at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. It does seem that some people can get their panties in a twist over simple things.

If someone is looking to get a co-worker fired, there's probably something going on other than a cartoon or a picture. If REAL sexual harassment was going on -- forcing sexual favors in exchange for satisfactory job reviews, for example -- then yeah, somebody needs to be fired. If it's a case of a delicate woman who saw a Playboy centerfold and was offended, then she's the one who needs to grow up.

Seems to me that I read elsewhere that the problem was caused by a cartoon. I don't know which is true, or if it was more than one incident. Either way, I'd like to see what all the fuss is about.

    April 7, 2011 at 5:32 p.m.
  • questions for the sexual harassment supporters here, are you ok with an older male boss slapping your daughter's butt around the work place for a 'job well done' ?

are you ok with her male co-workers hanging a cartoon that she finds offensive and such ?

    April 7, 2011 at 3:04 p.m.
  • I am apalled at those of you who think sexual harrassment in the workplace should be put in the "boys will be boys" category...I don't care how well you do your "job"...that's no excuse to be vulgar. Please...this isn't 1955...grow up!

  • According to the guys that got wrongfully terminated, "it's funny when they kicked that tree they didn't know all the crap that was going to fall out." I hope they release the other BS that they found out so the city of Victoria can all find out how corrupt the management really is by keeping the employees that have done waaaay worse and firing 2 of the cities best men.

    April 6, 2011 at 11:30 p.m.
  • Hey everyone. Have you payed all your city taxes? They are going to need the money to fight and then lose a law sue. They need to sue.

    April 6, 2011 at 11:21 p.m.
  • No Station One would NEVER Get special treatment......*CHUCKling to myself*

    April 6, 2011 at 11:21 p.m.
  • @ ilovemyff

Don't tell me you think a station one boy is getting special treatment. That would never happen. I cant wait to see headlines. City pays out millions to wrongfully terminated fire fighters! I love how news center 25 blurred out the pics. I have seen them. So if the city thinks they are inappropriate then why do the fire fighters get to watch TV?

    April 6, 2011 at 11:17 p.m.
  • Looks like the City of Victoria Station Fire 2, I mean Victoria City of Fire 2 Station, I mean Fire of Victoria Station 2, I mean Victoria Fire of City 2, err Station Fire Victoria 2, man I hate it when I mamdooh that.....just forget it.

    April 6, 2011 at 11:15 p.m.
  • If the guys really haven't gotten officially fired and are still on their grievance period, then that means they should have had a fair chance to make their case to the City Manager. If that is true, then the City has violated some major laws by releasing that they were fired before they are officially fired. Now they don't have a chance in hell to make a fair grievance. Looks like a lawsuit will be surfacing soon....

    April 6, 2011 at 11:09 p.m.
  • "Sexually suggestive" pictures is kinda vague.....there are many pictures, items, words, etc that are harmless but my husband finds "sexually suggestive".....it's all in the eye & mind of the beholder. ; )

    April 6, 2011 at 11:08 p.m.
  • Yeah, apparently the Assistant City Manager decided he wanted to use these guys as a "lamb" for slaughtering for the rest of the fire department to see so they would know he was serious and can fire anyone for whatever he wants. He has seriously shaken everyone up at every station since all the firefighters do stuff like that every day. Hmmmm I wonder why the guy at Station One downtown that kept posting the same pictures on the bulletin board as a joke didn't even get reprimanded, but the other guys who did less got fired.... Oops did I say Station One????

    April 6, 2011 at 10:58 p.m.
  • I guess I'm lucky. I was 22 years old before I found harass was one word.

    April 6, 2011 at 10:43 p.m.
  • SFA, I wish! Had that been true I believe he would still have a job & we'd keep him plenty busy!!! Oddly enough, my guy didn't get fired for his sexual misbehavior instead he fired himself by stealing the safe!

If what is being stated about the situation surrounding these terminations is true, sounds like the City better be prepared for another lawsuit. Some people would be better served jerking something other than their knee.

The officer your talking about well now they are both officers helped the old fire chief cheat on his first wife with another city employee. So they got a pass!

    April 6, 2011 at 10:15 p.m.
  • I have another question. Out of the 16 fire department members I have talked to, not one thinks the guys did anything wrong. Every one of them said the same thing. They got railroaded just to get ride of one guy. He did his job but was not liked by some people in the office. My question is how did they get fired if no one made a complaint?

    April 6, 2011 at 10:12 p.m.
  • Let me see if i have the facts right. Two good men put some pictures up in one of the other guys looker. (you can see more on network TV then in the pictures). The guy whose looker they put it up in found it funny. Then a guy at a different station got his hands on the pictures and put them up around the station. An office told him to take them down. He then put them back up. The officer took them to the acting fire chief. No one made any complaint of sexual harassment. One of the two guys at the station were it started was not liked by the chiefs. So why did two guys get fired but the third was not even talked to about it?

  • @Kyle, texting will not work. See vbb. Hope that helps!

  • Sign me up for sexual harassment training! I need to improve my techniques!

    ;-)

    April 6, 2011 at 9:40 p.m.
  • @vbb, I didn't know you worked for Brett Favre!

    April 6, 2011 at 9:39 p.m.
  • Recently at work, a guy was moved into a management position, everybody was laying odds on how long he would last because of the workload, I said he wouldn't last cuz he wouldn't be able to contain "himself" profesionally in our work environment as it is 99% female. Sure enough he started texting pictures of his penis to many of his subordinates and telling others he wanted them to have his baby. Someone reported his behavior & he was whisked off to sexual harassment training classes. Of course, he is no longer employed at my workplace & we no longer refer to certain job duties as "looking for holes". : )

    April 6, 2011 at 9:34 p.m.
  • @roberttx it's my understanding that this cartoon was not at anyone's expense. if people are easily offended by cartoons, then they should stay away from the advocate because they post the most offensive cartoons of all...politcal cartoons. See section B of the paper, but only if you dont want to be offended. Seriously.

@justamom, exactly. Meant for only the feminsts. 99.9% of women can laugh it off, roll their eyes and ignore the mouth breathers. I'm sure they have better things to waste their time on.

Now to bring back smoking in the workplace! Bwah ha ha ha ha!

  • Archie and SFA- I think you mean the feminists. If cartoons of suggestive content are the only things wrong then great!!! What if they went to see an R rated movie? Or watched Family Guy in there home? Is that a judge of how well they can do their jobs? This is total BS. Women who are so darn sensitive make it so hard for the rest of us. I have to look at a morbid picture of a dead baby every morning and it is freedom of speech, these guys have a cartoon in their OWN workspace and they get fired. Reinstate the firemen and fire the guy with the abortion posters!!! Sorry I get worked up.

    April 6, 2011 at 8:30 p.m.
  • Next, somebody will get fired for cussin'.

    April 6, 2011 at 8:29 p.m.
  • And they didn't even lie to the Grand Jury. That's what happens when you're to far down the city's pecking order to afford attorney Randy Schaffer like others who's behavior certainly makes them guilty of misconduct.

    April 6, 2011 at 6:18 p.m.
  • wow!! really? its a sad day when good people get fired over a cartoon!! and also city officials, what about your grievance period? COV is making a huge mistake by not following their own rules!!!!

    April 6, 2011 at 6:14 p.m.
  • That's pure BS!!!! You can cheat on your spouse and start living with a co-worker, and the next thing you know, you become AN OFFICER in the DEPARTMENT!
    I'm gonna throw up!

    April 6, 2011 at 5:50 p.m.
  • Wow. What a shame to do such a thing and what a disgrace to other firefighters and volunteer firefighters. It may just be a small hick town but firefighting anywhere is s noble and honest profession. If you want to do something screwed up and corrupt, JOIN THE SCHOOL BOARD!!!
