Not one, but TWO models of a Don Martin de Leon statue have been created and have made its rounds throughout the community for several years now. One was created by our Tom Jones, a wax model, and the second one was created of metal - the intent was to promote the erection of this statue with funds from various organizatgions, committees, clubs, societies, etc., and at one time or another these models have been displayed at various locations, including the Museum of the Coastal Bend, and one (or both) are currentnly stored in the office of Mr. Gary Dunnam. A decision is long overdue concerning the possible erection of such a statue. An ideal location was even discussed at one time at the Victoria Historical Commission -- and that was to place it in the middle of the city-owned property at the corner of North and Main. I certainly agree that such a statue should be erected commemorating our city's Founding Father.

Martin de Leon and his family were a critical part of the early history of Texas. Pride in heritage and history are reason enough to erect a statue of Martin de Leon in Victoria. I hope the City and County see their way to establishing a statue that would bring honor to the City and to its founder.

How did you guess this was where the family was going next? One of our objectives was to gather the family and engage in expanding what we individually knew of our history, build a collective body, as well as encourage new research. Recent research does not support what is been commonly held as truth about the Calle de los Diez Amigos, as stated. Each time we unlock new information, we learn more about not only ourselves, but the colonial history of Victoria. It is a history that should be fondly embraced, by not only descendants, but the community; our history is the history of Victoria, it is an honorable one, and much older than we commonly have known. We agree Victoria needs a tribute to it's founders, Don Martin de Leon, Dona Patricia de la Garza and their children. With this homecoming, the family initiates a Don Martin Historical Monument project. We hope Victoria joins us in our vision. Blanche de Leon
