An American flag waves in the wind Monday as a mobile home on the 400 block of Meadowlane Drive in Fordtran burns to the ground. The fire started after the mobile home next door caught fire and the wind caused the fire to spread. The cause of the first fire is still under investigation.

Two neighboring mobile homes in the 400 block of Meadowlane Drive in Fordtran caught fire Monday about 4:30 p.m. One man was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, and a couple living in the second home escaped the blaze without injury. Both homes were total losses.

Battalion Chief Shannon Martin said Fordtran Volunteer Fire Department was the first to arrive on the scene.

"Fordtran Volunteer Fire Department was the first to arrive on scene and found one mobile home that was fully engulfed," Martin said.

Shortly after, the second home became fully engulfed.

Though the cause of the fire is yet unknown, Victoria County Fire Marshal Ron Pray said the flames first ignited at 411 Meadowland Drive before spreading to 491 Meadowlane Drive.

"While en route here, the second home caught fire," Pray said. "The embers from the first home blew over from the strong wind gusts we're having right now and caught the second house on fire."

A man living at 411 Meadowlane Drive, Ricky Williams, was transported to DeTar Hospital with smoke inhalation and burns. He was then airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center burn unit, where he was listed as stable but in ICU.

Victoria Fire Department, Victoria County Sheriffs Office and the American Red Cross Crossroads Chapter also responded to the scene.

Red Cross Emergency Services Director Linda May said she is assisting the couple residing in the second home with clothing and food. The couple does have insurance, she said, and will temporarily stay with other family.

"When the other gentleman gets out of the hospital, we'll help him too," May said.
