Texas Department of Public Safety troopers seized 64 pounds of marijuana in a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 77 North near Fleming Prairie Road about 7:15 a.m. Thursday.

Vicente Chapa Jr., 39, of Benavides, was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana, a second-degree felony.

Troopers pulled over a Chevrolet pickup on suspicion of speeding and noticed several signs of possible criminal activity, according to an arrest report.

A drug detection dog conducted a free-air search and alerted troopers to the 29 bundles of marijuana that were inside the truck's gas tank, according to the report.

Chapa claimed responsibility for the marijuana, so a passenger traveling with him was not charged, the report said.
